I'm only aware of the Magnificant 7 and the many sequals of it being rip-offs. Are there others?
Phooey! I'll pass....the original is a classic in my book and needs no remake. In fact,I must say that I'm kinda tired of this trend towards remaking good movies as opposed to originality.
BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS (1980) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_Beyond_the_Stars) is definitely a rip-off/tribute version of Kurosawa's film.

Yes. There are many, including the horrible Lou Ferrigno movie THE SEVEN MAGNIFICENT GLADIATORS.
Also, a lot of martial arts movies from the 1970s used the popular theme of a group of fighters protecting a village or monastery or whatever from bad guys.

I don't mind at all if they re-work the story. That's fine by me. Many of those "re-workings" were very good or at least entertaining.
But an actual, serious re-make? I don't see how they can improve on or even come close to the original. It's like re-making Gone With the Wind. Wow. What a bad idea.
The only way I can see this working is if they gave it to a director who would shamelessly trample all over the original and attempt to make it his own. Maybe they could give it to Michael Bay, and he could cast Shia in Toshiro Mifune's role. The katana could be somehow tipped with gunpowder and cause explosions everytime they hit anything. Near the end the Seven could stand on each other's shoulders and form some kind of giant, feudal Mecha-Samurai. Or Tim Burton could get it and give Mifune's role to Johhny Depp. They could call it Edward Katana Hands.
Usually I'm pretty open minded about remakes and reimagings, at least I like to think I am. But this movie is really perfect IMO. It's one of the few very long films that is worth every minute I spend watching it. I think this is Hollywood at its most shameless.

While many of these films are definitely in the Seven Samurai mold, I feel it should be mentioned the basic storyline predates film itself. There are mythological/folk tale type stories in some cultures with similar stories. It's a storyline with classical roots - sieged innocents recruit badasses to save themselves.
Another example is Beach of the War Gods.
I think I heard somewhere this movie was going to be about mercenaries in Asia or something. Its just using the name Seven Samurai.
I just rewatched the original...there is nothing that can possibily be improved with the remake
it is a classic for a reason
