Title: Another Useless Poll. Mattresses: Firm or Soft?
Post by: Flick James on October 25, 2011, 06:22:38 PM
I took the wife and the boys on a 5-hour drive into the mountains in Eastern Arizona and rented a cabin for a couple of days. Great cabin, great fireplace, very cozy and relaxing except for one thing. The mattress on the bed was very uncomfortable and after a couple of nights, my back is very sore. I'm finding as I grow older I cannot abide anything but a very firm mattress. This thing was way too soft. I remember when I was young I preferred a soft mattress.

Anyway, I'm back home and looking forward to a good night's rest on my wonderfully firm mattress. A perfectly useless poll to be sure, but how do you prefer your mattress?

Strange that you should post this, Flick because I do need a new mattress.

Me too. I probably have the worst mattress in the world, as it is essentially like sleeping on a water bed. I have no idea why on earth I've not bothered to get a new one in like, 3 years. I'm an idiot because my back is always killing me and it's the one thing the ladies always complain of...

I sleep on the couch. I never use the bed. Havent since 2008.
And I would rather sleep on a floor than a soft matteress.

towards the middle, to soft and I feel like I'm falling and to firm and I feel like sleeping on bricks.

Same as Flick.  As I get older, firmer is better for the back.

I'm an in the middle person...not too soft and not too firm. I do need it a bit firmer than I used to...back's always tired and sore.

A useless poll?  Bah!  Nothing is useless as long as I can make fun of it!

...

... dammmit.  I can't think of anything.

Nothing feels better than a super soft bed with a down comforter and some super thick sheets.

What is a mattress?

I sleep on the floor. Not on the floor itself, but ontop of a(n) . . .

afghan
quilt
blanket
sheet

And when it gets colder, because I can't stand anything on top of me, I sleep in my street clothes.

Right now I am sleeping in the living room, so I can sleep under the ceiling fan, but as it gets colder, I'll probably move back to sleeping on the bedroom floor, as the bedroom is easier to heat than the living room, without turning on the central heating

Even if I only turn on the central heating, when I am in the apartment, my electric bill for the month doubles or even triples. So, I have gone to the European way of heating. Just heating the room I am in with a small portable heater.

Recently, I saw a local TV commercial in my area for a furniture store.  They said after a certain number of years (8 or 10 maybe) your mattress weighs substantially more than when you originally bought it (it was a high percentage . . . something like 20% to 30% more, I believe).  This extra weight is caused by dead skin and perspiration seeping into the mattress over the years.  I assume the percentage is even higher if you pee the bed.  This seems like a lot of extra weight to me, but maybe it's true.  Think about it the next time you sleep in someone else's bed . . .
