Not sure I support the possibility a crystal clear, vibrant restored print of this movie. I like the muddy, cruddy look of MANOS. It's part of the film's (very limited and specialized) appeal. "Every frame of this film looks like somebody's last known photograph!"
I do like the HD but I will have to second this. The grainy last know photograph appeal makes this film fun.
Say no to HD on this one.
Later,
John
but.....but it'll kill the look and feel of the glorous masterpeice of Manos!
Bad movies belong on bad video.
Ill get it just so i can say i own manos the hands of fate on blu-ray. and hey at least the last known photograph versions will still be available.
Some movies just look like they belong on old worn out videotapes. This is one of them.
I wouldn't mind seeing the nightgown rasslin' scene in hi-def.
I agree. MANOS is good...well..not good good...I like MANOS just fine grainy and washed out.
Manos in HD? Hell, why not.
I looked at the screenshot on there and I do like how it looks. Its still a little beat up but it looks like it would watching it in a theater. I was surprised a work print was even made for the film.
I especially love the part where it shows the original opening shots.

This will be awesome, The full glory of the Cape is worth the cost alone. Need commentary track too,m not just from the cameraman that is in the documentary.
I love the crappy DVD I have of this movie, but I'm all for a restoration. It'll still look like crap! :)
I don't know if anyone has checked the site recently but they've more than met their goal of $10,000. They have pledges totalling $22,053! They should be able to afford to produce some extras for the Blu-ray/DVD and maybe a 35mm preservation negative. I might chip in a few bucks so I can get a pin or t-shirt.
My Brainfart colleague wrote an article on this last week: http://planetbrainfart.com/2011/12/29/manos-the-restoration/
Don't get me wrong, I love the b-movies (obviously or I wouldn't be hanging out here), but if MANOS gets a blu-ray release when LAWRENCE OF ARABIA still doesn't have one, there are going to be repercussions.

Surely LAWRENCE is in the works. Really, there are tons of films that deserve restoration and distribution long before this, but hey, it's a collector who took a chance on funding from fans and it worked! So I'm happy about that.
I like Manos just the way it was. Grainy, hard to follow, painfull, torgo, nightgown wrasslin', and manos wins at the end.

Yeah, that's what I thought two years ago. :bluesad:
I do admire that the guy took the initiative to appeal to the fans himself like this, and that it worked. It just seems like this is a movie that doesn't warrant or need that kind of treatment.
It is fascinating seeing some of the images from this film - some of it visually actually isn't too bad. Still an awful film, but it's a memorably awful film for the story behind it if nothing else. There are less deserving films already on Bluray.

I at least found that it has a UK release date of June 2012; a US release shouldn't be far behind but no date has been set. There's also an interview from last March about the
Taxi Driver restortation here (http://thedigitalbits.com/articles/taxidriver/interview.html) and it's mentioned that
Lawrence of Arabia was currently going through a full restoration, scanned at 8K (more than 4 times the resolution of Blu-ray but they'll use the same materials for theatrical presentations and whatnot) and would probably take a year, so it seems like they're on track!

Well, that's cool. The Taxi Driver interview was interesting too
Not sure if I like the sound of this.
Bad looking film is part of the charm...
Higher quality to show lesser quality?   I don't know which way to go on that.
They ought to do a blu-ray/DVD combo special edition in which you get a fully restored HD version of the film on blu and then the normal crappy looking version that we all know and love on the DVD. Or, I guess they could just put both on the blu-ray itself and then give you the option on the main menu or something.
