Title: New Year's Resolutions
Post by: Flick James on December 05, 2011, 11:25:54 AM
Well, it's December. A new year is nearly upon us. Time to start selecting those resolutions.

Actually, I don't normally make NY resolutions, because they tend to be empty, just something people do obligatorily and once January 2nd rolls around, maybe the 3rd, it's nearly forgotten.

This year, however, my wife and I have made a joint resolution that there is one thing we will positively do in 2012: FINALLY WRITE THAT FREAKING SCREENPLAY WE'VE TALKED ABOUT FOR THREE YEARS! We are buying Final Draft as Christmas gift for ourselves, and GD it, we're gonna do it. We have about 3 or 4 solid ideas we've talked about, had another one that came up over breakfast this weekend, she used to work for Paradigm in Hollywood years ago and still knows people in the business. Why the f*** not? We've been having kids, been very bogged down with multiple parenthood, but damnit, we've been using that as an excuse for far too long.

So, what's your New Year's resolution?

I have an older version of Final Draft and I absolutely love it.  I'm sure they have made improvements over the past several years.

I damn well plan to drop below 200 pounds in 2012.  A few years ago I was close to 250.  I got down to about 235 or so.  Then I had some health problems (diabetes, heart attack) and dropped more weight.  I've been able to get as low as 204, but couldn't get down below 200.  But I damn well plan to do it in 2012.

If you're hovering a little over 200, that is a very realistic goal. I was gaining weight and was just about to hit the 200 mark. I went to the doctor and weighed in at 199. There was just something about the threat of hitting that even number that forced a change. However, what worked for me was not making it a goal to lose weight. Instead, I set another goal that involved increased physical activity in order to achieve, and made THAT my goal. My wife and I committed ourselves to run in a 5K charity run in Phoenix and just started preparing for it. Our goal was to run together and to finish in less than 35 minutes. We barely altered our diet, basically just reduced our calories a little bit, but not much.

We succeeded in running the 5K in under 35 minutes, so between hitting that goal and just decreasing the intake a little bit we naturally dropped some weight. I went from 199 to 185 in 3 months.

I guess the moral of the story is to set a goal that will naturally result in reduced weight, better shape, etc., and NOT make it a goal of losing weight.

Worked for me anyway.

I'd love to get down to around 180 or so.  That's about what I weighed back in the days when I was a gym rat (most days I would work out twice . . . once in the morning and again at night . . . one workout was all cardio and the other was all weightlifting).  Of course that was 20 years ago . . .

First: lose some weight. I grew up fat. Lost a ton of weight in high school. Put it back on just after. Re-lost it in early 20s. Recently jumped back to the high 190s or so.

Also: stay clean and sober.

Another: find a girlfriend. I'm pushing 28. Never had one. Or a date. Or sex. Must happen.

Flick James is absolutely right. Don't make it a resolution to lose weight, make it a resolution to become more physically active. Find an activity you enjoy that will make you go out and get sweaty and sort of out of breath. Don't worry about your weight, that will take care of itself, the physical activity is the important thing.

Have fun, because if you're having fun you will keep doing it. I started going on very long bike rides. I love it, it's fun.

My resolution has always been to try something new, or to do something in a different way then I'm used to. Sometimes it's something as simple as taking a different route to work, other times it's striking up conversations with absolute strangers for no reason. Once a day, do something you wouldn't normally do. Never had bleu cheese? Give it a go! Those small decisions keep me on my toes, and every once in a while lead to something unexpected.

Nuts to that, RC. You can't leave, we need your expertise. You're the only person with your exact skill-set and knowledge, you're a font we can't afford to lose.

Seconded.

I want to get my life and health back and I want to see if there is something else beyond the life of a wage slave. Apart from becoming a gigolo.  :buggedout:

RC - You can't die.  You'll miss the big badmovies.org party.  And you're one of the most important guests.  Trevor even told me he intended to wash his undies before the party.

I found I never had much luck when I tried to "find" a girlfriend.  What usually worked best for me was meeting a girl sort of by accident somewhere (at a party, bar, wedding, whatever) and we ended up dating afterward.  One such relationship lasted more than 3 years, another lasted about 1 1/2 years, and one ended up with me getting married!

Burgo already said it, but remember to relax about this.  It was only when I stopped really worrying about it (in fact, I fully decided to not actually look for a woman until I'd sorted out some life issues) that I found a relationship that counted (I mean that literally, longest one before it was like three dates), and it was only about a year ago.  And I'm around your age.  So, remember, it can happen (and if it can happen to a guy as odd as me, it really can happen to anyone).  Just don't take it *too* seriously, and don't NEED it - as that feeling of need turns a lot of women away.

I dunno if it's helpful, but not too long ago my boat wasn't too different from yours.  You'll get there.

As far as my own resolutions...  Well, last year I was hoping to lose weight.  I didn't lose as much as I wanted, but by the end of this year I think I'll be down around 15 pounds.  I weighed 165 this morning (bit under 180 at the beginning of the year) and I'm 5'11", for what that's worth.  But I have more fat on me than that sounds like (probably need to lose about 15 pounds of actual fat), as my frame is fairly thin and I don't have a lot of muscle.  So, for 2012, I want to get in decent shape.  Doesn't have to be great, just decent shape - want to be able to jog a couple miles without stopping, lift a decent amount of weight without killing myself, and be badass at DDR.  Not a whole lot to ask, really.  I'm thinking I'm going to get into kettlebell exercises - actually looks fun, and I HATE standard freeweights.  Oh, and I recently started jogging.

I vowed to make four short films this year.  I made one.  Oh well.  I'll vow to make four again next year, and actually do it.

Next year, I'm starting grad school, and I'm vowing to actually do a good job - I WILL NOT end up with a Master's and still be unable to find a job.   :hatred:

Last year, I vowed to age a full year.  I will make that vow again, as I have fully succeeded.

My general rule is to not worry about resolutions, but mine is to be nicer to a friend of mine who we make fun of constantly [good natured but my friends and I really should be nicer]

So yeah thats that one.  I guess as a life goal more than resolution is to get a new job.  Now that I'm graduating I need to find something industry related quick.

Jim H: Got the film posted anywhere?  I'd love to check it out.

Eh.  I make this one every year.  I don't even really think about it.  Meh.  I feel like the dude in 40 Year Old Virgin.  Why even bother.  Just extra stress one doesn't need.  I have video games and the internet.

Still.  It'd be nice.
