Title: Ralph Bakshi's Wizards
Post by: J.R. on April 24, 2002, 08:13:10 AM
Has anyone else seen this completely f@%$-ed up movie? It's the closest thing to an acid trip ever caught on screen. It's from Ralph Bakshi, the guy behind Heavy Metal, Fritz The Cat and American Pop. He's either a genius or a pervert, depending on who you ask, and I'm in the latter's camp. Dude's a sicko. Ayway,  this movie is set in some weird alternate reality with wizards and evil forces. It's a pretty typical fantasy film (excluding Bakshi's idiosynchrosies), except for the huge Tolkien-esque battle scenes fought between animated wizards and stock footage of Nazi stormtroopers with trippy multicolored backgrounds. Weird, weird, weird.

Weird, indeed. The ending, with the good wizard , useing, shall we say, "Unexpected Technology" to win the fight, i thought was strange. Like Vaugn Bode with a film budget, kind of.

Fine movie.  Haven't seen it in years.  Finally, an ending that I agree with.

Funny film.  Bakshi's best, as far as I'm concerned.

"You killed Fritz!"

Terrible, terrible movie.  Why did Andy give it 4 blobs?  It deserved 1; MAYBE 2 for the They've killed Fritz scene.

he's a dick in my book. he totally f**ked up fritz the cat and did it against creator robert crumb's will. for what they are they're good but for a animated adaptation of the great comics of R. Crumb they blow.

It's as if animators set out to do adult-oriented cartoons, so they figure the best way to do that is to throw in a ton of nudity, cussing and gore, just to shove it in your face. Maybe producing quality stories with rich characters and smart dialog isn't their thing.

Andrew is never wrong. Well, seldom wrong. He gave "Wizards" four blobs, because it is a great movie. I loved the action in it. And I loved the climatic wizard's duel at the end. Every time I see it, it leaves me ROTFL.
Actually, I loved most of what Bakshi has done. "Wizards." "Lord of the Rings." It's unfortunate he never got to make part II. "Fire and Ice," which he made with Frank Frazetta. "American Pop," which my sister and I saw in a preview screening. And "Cool World." That is the only one I saw, that I did not like. The only movie to put me to sleep. Enjoy!
