Title: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Post by: Ted C on January 17, 2012, 01:49:10 PM
What? No thread on this movie, yet?

I found it to be a heaping helping of drama, mystery, and suspense. And without giving too much away, I think I can say that the heroine has an exquisitely developed sense of vengeance.

I don't know how the American production of the movie compares to the books, since I haven't read them, so I must leave any "they got this plot-point/character/theme/etc wrong" arguments to others.

I enjoyed both the Swedish and the American versions of this.  They're really quite similar.  David Fincher's version may be slightly ahead simply because it's longer and covers more of the epilogue of the novel (which I haven't read, by the way).

I did not read them either, but my wife read all of them and we discussed various plot points after seeing both versions. She seems to think the American version was just a little more thorough, but not tremendously so.

**SPOILER ALERT**

The rape scene, we both agreed, was slightly more disturbing in the American version, and she thought it captured the vibe of the book better in that regard, although she said the scene in the book lasted much longer and was even more brutal than either of the films.

**END SPOILER***

I read somewhere that the director of the Swedish version was a little annoyed with the American version, essentially stating "why is there a need for an American adaptation when there's a perfectly good Swedish one?" There is something to be said for that argument, although I'm equally sure there is some annoyance over the lack of attention that his versions would continue to get as a result, especially if they continue to be as well done as this first one was.

I liked it but I thought the part at the ending was a little too forced and hurried.  I think they could have saved that for the next movie.  If you don't remember it is the part after they solve the mystery.

If I recall correctly, the sequels are being done at the same time, much like the LOTR movies were, so I presume that ending the movie as they did helps set up the opening of the second movie.
