Title: VHS "gimmick" boxes.
Post by: Joe on March 01, 2012, 02:45:18 PM
This should be fun.

How do, everyone. I have recently been on a quest to obtain gimmick VHS boxes (with the tape included of course). I was going through my collection the other day and i came upon my copy of "Bleeders" with the plastic cover full of this red "blood" liquid. I started reminiscing about seeing all kinds of crazy VHS gimmick boxes as a kid, now i need to own them.

over the past few days, I have managed to snag a few that i have been chasing for a while, which include

The Dead Pit - 3D pop-out cover with light up eyes
Frankenhooker - Talking box
Black Roses- 3D pop-out cover
Demon Wind- Lenticular cover
Metemorphosis- 3D pop-out cover with light up eyes

i have been looking for a copy of "The Progeny" in its original metal case to no avail.

So, i was wondering if you guys could conjure up any memories or knowledge of gimmick VHS boxes and if you possibly own any that i can purchase or trade for, that would be super rad.

The first two that came to mind for me were the talking "WANNA DATE?" box for "Frankenhooker" and the light-up eyeballs on "Metamorphosis," but you've already got those. So I guess this is a useless post. Sigh.

I recall seeing at least one version Jack Frost http://www.badmovies.org/movies/jackfrost/ that had that picture where you wave it back & forth, & the picture changes from a normal snowman to the demon snowman...

Good one! Actually both Jack Frost and its sequel had lenticular covers. Unfortunately, I  already own them.

I vaguely recall my VHS of KING KONG that had a chip in the front cover that would "roar" when you pressed it.

I remember either Swamp Thing or Toxic Avenger having a 3d pop out case. I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure.

Thanks guys! Claws, score on the Microwave Massacre. I tried to give you a Karma but for some reason it won't let me.

I seem to remember the Jim Varney movie Fast Food having a gimmicky VHS cover, but I can't seem to find an image.

If you pressed Kong's chest on my VHS copy of KING KONG (1933) he would roar.

The VHS copy of Johnny Mnemonic had a see-thru cover and a "flesh" colored video tape, so when you pulled the tape out of the box it looked like you were removing a disk from Keanu Reeves' head. That was a touch I always though was clever.

Of course, now that the use of portable magnetic disks has diminished, the effect is somewhat ruined.

I collect these too! You should pick up the latest issue of HorrorHound magazine. This months issue has an article on gimmick vhs boxes. Anyway,
In case you dont get the mag, just to help your hunt. The others they listed in the article (that I didn't see posted here) are
Demon Wind, Bleeders, Fright Night part 2, Mirror, Progeny, Uncle Sam, and The Visitors. Happy Hunting!

Not a VHS box but, my Dusty Rhodes wrestling DVD boxed set had one of those greeting card style buttons you press to make the box talk. It had one of Dusty's promo recordings. It stopped working after two days.
