QuoteThe "Video Nasties" were part of a list compiled by the United Kingdom government, containing films which were considered to be films of questionable material, be it excessive violence, or sexuality, or simply inappropriate subject matter. these films were pulled from rental shelves, and in some instances, the production companies were tried. Of the 74 films appearing on the list, 39 were successfully tried as being 'obscene.'
I was interested to find out to find out how many of these notorious 'Nasties' I've actually seen, so I thought I'd throw it open to the board as well... If you feel like it,tick every one on the list you've had the pleasure (ahem) of watching. - you don't have to own the DVD or anything, just watched at some point. also feel free to add any opinions/stuff about these movies...
there's a short description of each one here, in case you might need a memory jog: http://www.critical-film.com/essays/Nasties/Nasties1.html
edit- just filled out the list, turns out I've only seen 15. thought it was more!
I've seen 8 of them. Also saw Madhouse, but that was from 2004 so I assume it's not the one on the list.
yeah the video nasties bill came in 1984, so all of those movies are before then...
I've seen six of these which is less than I expected. I only voted five though because I didn't notice Evil Dead.
sorry Jase I forgot to set the 'edit votes' thing when I posted, never mind
the one I haven't seen yet out of these that I'd most like to is THE BURNING. anyone know if there's an uncut version available? (or what the most uncut version is)
I marked Bay Of Blood, Blood Feast, The Evil Dead, Flesh For Frankenstein, Last House On the Left, Love Camp 7, Possession, SS Experiment Camp, and Xtro. I easily could have seen more under different titles, or just forgotten about them.
32..
Why laughable stuff like DONT LOOK IN THE BASEMENT and old stuff like BLOOD FEAST are listed make it even more silly than the idea behind it in the first place.
yeah. some of these even are on youtube, uncut. there's no consistency to the reasoning behind why some films are on this list and some aren't. a film like THE MUTILATOR is way more graphic than INFERNO for example, but it's not even on the list whereas INFERNO is...
ooh edit, MUTILATOR came out 1 year after the bill. you get my drift though...
I've only seen Xtro, and that was only in the last year because I found out it had a naked Maryam D'Abo! Thank you, Bad Movies Forumites!
The usual video nasty candidate really isn't my kind of movie, though. I'm not a real fan of slasher/basher/crasher whatever movies. The only giallo I like is the strawberry kind that wobbles.
I've seen 14 of them. RC, I would'nt go so far as to say Don't Look In the Basement is laughable, but I agree that it doesn't belong on the list because the gore quotient is quite low compared to some of the others. I'd like to see the ones I haven't watched yet ie: Absurd.
someone voted for the last one "n/a" - I only had that there because I chose too many options by mistake and couldn't delete it lol
I've seen 34 . . . although I suspect there may be 1 or 2 others that I may have seen under alternate titles.
20 with a few more sitting on my shelf unwatched as of yet
20
Only 5 I think.
I believe ill make it a goal for myself to see all the video nasties this year. Fun Stuff!
I went for all I could remember, although a lot of those films have been released under different names, so I may have missed a few.
shame about the 'alternate titles' thing. I wish they didn't do that, you never get it with band's albums for example - well maybe very rarely.. but every movie released before 1990 seems to have about 73 different titles
I also saw MADHOUSE, but I didn't think they could be talking about the Vincent Price film, so I didn't click it.
What put their bloomers in a twist, an'hoo?
I've seen 40 of those. Possibly more: I may have seen others that had different titles than the ones I see on the list.
after some really quick and possibly unreliable research, the MADHOUSE on this list was made in 1981 and the alternate titles are:
THERE WAS A LITTLE GIRL
AND WHEN SHE WAS BAD
FLESH AND THE BEAST
SCARED TO DEATH
PARTY DES SCHRECKENS
I've seen so few on the list. I am surprised that not more have seen Evilspeak.
Just one. "The Funhouse," but I hope most of the others are better than that one. I can remember that is one of the few films that ever gave me nausea.
11... of them I think I liked Xtro the best.
I have seen 14 of them. There is a brilliant DVD documentary called Video Nasties: The Definitive Guide Box Set

It's really interesting and great to use as a tick sheet.
Only 4 for me.
Im ashamed of that. :bluesad:
Dam!
I forgot to count the BOGEYMAN,FROZEN SCREAM,TENABREA,LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT,and I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE!
So that makes it 38.
'doh... I really should've set it to allow users to edit their votes. won't let me do it now.
@crackers, my mate's got that Nasties Guide. I keep pestering him to lend it to me...
EDIT: Fixed it for you. -Mofo Rising
I think I've actually seen 35 of them! I remember hearing some of those movies were banned at some point and I was expecting them to be really gorey or violent, and ended up just being really confused as to why they were banned after watching them.

I felt that way about some of them, like Evilspeak. Some of them, I think, are due to the times in which they were released.
The Last House on the Left is fairly dark even by today's standards, let alone the early 70's. The aforementioned
Evilspeak was released during the early 80's
Satanic panic, which was a very big deal in the U.S., but also carried some sway across the pond, and I guess people thought it would encourage Satanism. I guess it didn't help that Anton Le Vey stated publicly that he loved the film.
Only 19? Man, I must be slippin'....

I've seen 24 of those. Shogun Assassin being the most recent. My potential future father in-law actually gave it to me!! How awesome is that?
