Title: THE HUNGER GAMES - CATCHING FIRE (2013)
Post by: indianasmith on March 10, 2014, 11:35:24 PM
I first heard the kids at my school talking about this series a couple of years ago.
On the recommendation of our English teacher, I read the first book - and completed the whole series in one weekend.
So much teen fiction is vapid, shallow pulp (yes, TWILIGHT, I'm talking to you!), but this series is one of the most powerful,
angry, raw things I have ever read.  So far the movies have done a splendid job of transferring this incredible trilogy to the
screen.  The casting was brilliant, and Jennifer Lawrence is heart-wrenching as Katniss Everdeen, the girl from District 12 who
inadvertently becomes the symbol of resistance to the oppressive government of Panem and its evil President Snow.
If you have not read these books, read them!
Then see the movies.  You will NOT regret it!

Strictly speaking, I found book 3 quite regrettable...

(Sorry Indy, couldn't let that by.  Books 1 and 2, very good.  Book 3 felt mailed in, deadline-rushed.)

Different stokes, I guess.  I thought MOCKINGJAY was the best of the series.

Sins that Mockingjay committed:

[spoilers]

1.  Pointless trip through the Capital at the end, pointlessly killing multiple characters along the way,
2.  Hijacking Peeta,
3.  Killing Prim.

My objections to the character deaths were that they were not used well in the storytelling.  (pointless deaths.)

The story felt hurried, unfinished, slapdash.

To me, that whole section made the book feel more authentic - street-to-street fighting is bloody and costly in any war.
But, as I said, everyone has different tastes.

Still, I can't wait for the movie! :teddyr:

You mean movies (two parts).

Hey, with luck they may consult Peter Jackson on script bloating...
