Dear everyone,
a friend of mine and me often see movies together as we share the fine taste of b-movies. Now we are seeing Godzilla and other monster movies.
But soon we want to pass to Sci-Fi, while I am quite the connoisseur (eheh) of giant monster movies, I am not really in Sci-Fi so I would like to ask for help.
At the moment we have this on list:
Galaxina [1980],
Forbidden Planet [1956],
Space Mutiny [1988],
Star Wars [1977] (thanks to Harmy's Star Wars Despecialized Edition)...
As Forbidden Planet [1956] shows the movies do not need to be bad. Nonetheless we don't mind, as reader of this website you know what I mean :)
So? What do you suggest from Sci-Fi old timers?
.INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS-both versions-from '56 and '75 are excellent.
.the THING (1982)
.PLAN 9 from OUTER SPACE (1959)
.ROBOT MONSTER (1953)
.ALIEN (1979)
.IT CONQUER THE WORLD (1956)
.2001: A SPACE ODDESSY (1968)
.THIS ISLAND EARTH (1955)
.WAR OF THE WORLDS (1953)
Even as bad as ROBOT MONSTER and PLAN 9 are-they are hugly entertaining-much more so then the tedious GALAXINA.
How could I forget:
Starcrash [1978], I already seen this one years ago. An incredible experience.
Thanks for suggestions, they look quite nice. Yet, according to the Borntreger's review of Galaxina, it should not be so bad (http://badmovies.org/movies/galaxina/)... However I read more negative reviews around. I guess you did not like it?
Any other?
The Black Hole... I have such fondness for this one. But it hasn't aged all that weel, plus it was a kid's show mostly.
It's slow but I've always liked Silent Runnning.

Fiend Without a Face
The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms
20 Million Miles to Earth

Them!
Quatermass films
Soylent Green

Really a nice list, I would add:

and do anyone have seen Ender's Game [2013]?
Forgot to add earlier:
The Time Machine (1960)
The Incredible Shrinking Man
The Monolith Monsters
The Deadly Mantis

The H-Man
The Mysterians
Gorath
Ghidrah, the Three-Headed Monster
Aliens
The Lathe of Heaven and The Illustrated Man are some good purist type sci fi. the former is the better movie but the only existing copy isn't the best quality and its pretty cheap production to begin with.
Phase 4 is pretty perfect combination of high and not so high art. it's an animals attack movie at it's base but somehow its so much more

Phase 4 is the ant one isn't it?
Bad Taste (1989)
This is a splatter science fiction horror comedy film. :teddyr:
Ed- Yes. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it's THE ant one

Bad Taste (1989)
Oh... yes. And from my favorite director too! While it is not sci-fi, about goriness, I prefer the never Braindead (1992). Jackson is a genius.
Little off-topic parenthesis, do anyone have seen the newest movie of Jackson? Lovely Bones?
ASTRO ZOMBIES (1968) (but don't blame me if your head hurts after you watch it...you asked)
TEENAGERS FROM OUTER SPACE (1959)
MISSILE TO THE MOON (1958)
edit to add: THE PHANTOM PLANET (1961)

etmoviesb,
You have gotten a lot of suggestions. Good movies, Bad movies, essentials, etc. Though I
LOVE 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, for example, I would not recommend it. The first time I watched it, I found it long, tedious, and boring. I have since come to
LOVE that one and other films I would describe as "motionless", I guess... "tedious". Other favorites have been suggested that are in my opinion tried and true diehards that are not for novices, obscure, or just plain lame.
However, for great SCIFI try:
THE THING From Another World (1951) The great 1980s remake was suggested to you, but without the superior original there'd be no great remake and that remake is more Horror anyway. If you are interested in classic SCIENCE FICTION films, start with the first post-war great SciFi film.
THE WAR OF THE WORLDS (1953) which is in color and has a wonderful look and effects. This one makes a strong impression particularly on young people.
INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1956) This one also has a wonderful remake, but it started with this superior film.
Three is enough to start with, no?
