Title: Movie androids
Post by: J.R. on May 10, 2002, 05:22:11 AM
Who in filmland decided that all androids of the future will be annoyingly monotone, super perky and almost glib? Data from Star Trek (although only slightly fitting in the description), Kay-Em from Jason X, you name it. Apparently scientists will be able to work out the daunting mathematics and mechanics of creating fully-funtioning human-like robots but won't be able to program them with personalities that aren't abrasively deadpan.

Data is neither perky nor really monotone

R2-D2, C-3PO - nope, neither is perky or glib

What other famous androids from movies?

"Black Hole" - No perky robots
"Saturn 3" - maniacally jeleous, not perky
"2001"  - Hal
"Alien" and "Aliens" - nope.  Not exactly perky, nor glib, nor monotone
"American Cyborg" - nope

What androids were you thinking of for "all"?

Actually, what's the diffirence between robots and androids? Were all of your examples androids? I agree with yout point regardless, I am  just curious.

OKJ, goo dpoint about "android" versus "robot"

If you narrow the definition of 'andriod" to just things that look like humans you still have:

"American Cyborg" - granted he was a cyborg, not an android
"Alien" and "Aliens" - Lance Henrickson 'perky'????
"Automatic" - OK, Olivier Grunner is monotone anyway.  But not perky
"Total Recall 2070" - The partner cop could be called glib and maybe a bit perky, but not really monotone.  Maybe a bit. OK...close on this one
"Droid Gunner (Cyberzone)" - The three female androids.  Not exactly montone or glib, but pretty perky
...

Don't forget the perky but rather dense android of CHERRY 2000.

And don't forget what's-her-name, the surprise-she's-an-android bot  from "Crash and Burn".   I don't recall how perky she was, but that might be due to the limitations of the actress.  Damn, now I'm going to have to pull that movie out this weekend.

Valeria from Robot Holocaust didn't really speak in a monotone, although Anjelika Jager gave an extremely wooden performance. she wasn't really perky either. Well, parts of her were, I guess :)

I think the android in Robot Holocaust was like that because *everyone* in that movie was pretty lifeless and monotone...
