Robert Aldrich is one overlooked filmmaker, with critics prefering to work on directors who have more of an "auteur" aura. Either that or his tendency to make "macho" movies make him less likeable to the intellectuals.

Anyway, he made a bunch of terrific films (to name a few: Attack!, Vera Cruz, Emperor of the North Pole, The Dirty Dozen, Ulzana's Raid), and him and Mike Hammer were a match made in heaven. Even for the standards of a film noir, "Kiss me deadly" moves forward at breakneck speed, and Hammer never got a better portrait than this one: more than ever, he is fiercely determined, shallow, egotistical and violent at the slightest provocation.

IMHO, this is one of the best noirs ever made.
