Wow. Was JAMES MASON a wonderful actor taking thankless roles or what?
I just saw parts of A STAR IS BORN which is a JUDY GARLAND flick, but JAMES MASON's tragic portrayal really carries that film and makes it still worthwhile. I watched JAMES MASON in a flick called FIVE FINGERS repeatedly, on FXM, and THAT was wonderful too. In that one he plays a spying mercenary crumb. Great British actors don't seem to have been as worried about their reputations as American actors...
I'd say he had some courage: he wasn't afraid to play a child molester.

JAMES MASON played an important role in my brother David's favorite film, LORD JIM, a thing I've yet to sit all the way through... And
I know well about it and probably have seen those few parts I have over the years on TCM because of JAMES MASON.
My favorite James Mason role....

My favorite's Lolita.
I love James Mason. JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH is one of my most-watched movies of all time. One of my favorite Mason performances is in THE VERDICT. And when I want James Mason hilarity, I watch either MANDINGO or COLD SWEAT and listen to his awful accents.
FRANKENSTEIN: THE TRUE STORY was a two part made-for-TV movie in the early '70s if I remember right (1973). I have a copy on vhs. Haven't seen it in decades, but JAMES MASON is in there as the skunk Dr. Polidori with them SKELETAL HANDS...
