Title: Top 5 Favorite Universal horror films-1931-1948
Post by: RCMerchant on February 24, 2016, 11:32:22 PM
From the DRACULA (1931) to ABBOT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN (1948) years.

My first-believe it or not-is NOT DRACULA (1931).
1.FRANKENSTEIN (1931)-this is still my favorite of the franchise. It's well made,it's scary, and its got pathos.
2.DRACULA (1931) there ya go.
3.The BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935)
4.the RAVEN (1935) is sick,sadistic-and Bela goes apes**t-its just so much fun.
5.SON OF FRANKENSTEIN (1939)-It's got Atwill (my favorite role by him),and Lugosi-who steals the show, and Basil Rathbone-whos quite manic.

Chaplin brought pathos to comedy-Karloff-to horror.
(Yes-Chaney did too-Lugosi-as great as he was-didn't evoke sympathy.
But we're talking the sound era here.)

1. THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN - a new world of gods and monsters!
2. THE BLACK CAT (1934) - supernatural? Perhaps. Baloney? Perhaps not.
3. FRANKENSTEIN - I think it will thrill you. It may shock you. It might even horrify you.
4. ISLAND OF LOST SOULS - Are we not men?
5. DRACULA (1931) (Spanish version) (sorry Bela, I like this one better! If you could have substituted Lugosi for that Spanish guy this would be the perfect Dracula!)

ISLAND OF LOST SOULS is most certainly a classic-and would be on my top 5-except it was not made by Universal-it's a Paramount picture.

You are correct R.C.! I'll substitute THE MUMMY for LOST SOULS. THE MUMMY never gets any love.

For me-as great as the photography in the MUMMY is-the shot of Karloffs glowing eyes is classic-the movie is way to slow and-well- boring.Of course thats just me)-The OLD DARK HOUSE (1932) would be up there with me too-I love that film!
And Karloff isnt the best part- the old lady and Thesiger is.
