Just barely started on it, but was struck with this line: " Men like his son, who would be joining him shortly. "
Hard to read stuff online these days, but I'll try to finish. Keep up the good work, it's interesting.

Until I read the whole story I can only say I think I know where you'd go with such a story and that line, presumably simply functional, may also be a foreshadow.
