Actually, I think it's been done as a movie.  Maybe "Space Camp" is close

Space Camp!?!? I forgot about that movie.  (FOR A GOOD REASON TOO!)

I actually liked Space Camp, with the exception of that stupid, completely pointless robot. It would have been a much better movie if they'd just made the launch an accident and had another character notice the morse code.
