It was comforting knowing one of the original masters was still with us. Good night CHUCK.
I saw him perform about 5 years ago. He still did a show here in STL once every month or two until about a year ago. He was clearly getting on when I saw him, but his showmanship and great backing band made it a fun show anyways. It was also a real privilege to hear a genre-defining song like Johnny B. Goode played and sung live by him, even if the guitar was a bit rough in spots.
Another fun story, friend of mine used to be a cashier at a casino. Chuck was a heck of a gambler, and they had to call him to tell him he'd forgotten something on the table a few years back. It was about $20,000 in chips. No big deal, he said, he'd be around in a day or two to pick them up.
RIP.
