BUT! I would have to go with...
.the BIRDS (1963) I seen it on TV in about 1970-scared the s**t out of me.
.PSYCHO (1960)
. SHADOW OF A DOUBT (1943) One of the first serial killer movies.

I almost went with VERTIGO.  It's so modern- it's complex. And the colors pop.
Ah, f**k VERTIGO is my 3rd.

... SHADOW OF A DOUBT (1943) One of the first serial killer movies.
That's a favorite, and I love TERESA WRIGHT.

Really tough call because I love Hitchcock. But I would say:

* NORTH BY NORTHWEST - Everyone talks about the crop duster scene. But I think there are so many great scenes in that movie. Great dialogue. Great suspense. Great chemistry between Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint.

* NOTORIOUS - Cary Grant again . . . this time with Ingrid Bergman. U.S. agents trying to thwart Nazis in post-WWII Brazil. In delicious black & white.

* DIAL M FOR MURDER - This is sort of like an episode of "Columbo" on steroids. We know who the villain is and we watch breathlessly as he tries to cover his tracks while the police investigate. One of the best film versions of a stage play ever produced. I got the 3-D blu-ray a few years ago and have watched it 3 or 4 times.

Additional notes:

* For many years, THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH (James Stewart / Doris Day version) was my favorite. It has slipped, but it's still in my top 6 or 7.

* FRENZY - Great stuff. I feel bad about leaving it out of my top 3, but it just missed the cut.

* THE BIRDS - This was a childhood favorite and I still love it. Probably my most-watched Hitchcock movie of all time.

* I have tried and tried, but I just can't fall in love with SPELLBOUND.

* REBECCA - Great movie that many people have forgotten about.

* My sleeper pick is TORN CURTAIN. One of Hitch's least flashy films, but there are several moments that I really love. The farmhouse sequence, the part where Newman and the other scientist are working out a formula on a chalk board, the bus ride . . . yeah.

And of course, PSYCHO, ROPE, STRANGERS ON A TRAIN, SHADOW OF A DOUBT, REAR WINDOW, VERTIGO, STAGE FRIGHT, and so on. The man had talent, I tell ya.

The Birds is the archetype horror movie. something that was totally fine yesterday has gone haywire today and catches everyone off guard. all they can do is scramble to try and figure out how to deal with it.

And it's never really explained either. It just happens- no rhyme or reason. Great film.

I can do without Doris Day's singing. Gimme Peter Lorre.

This is the one Hitchcock film that I just can't get into. I own the DVD and have watched it several times. I just can't warm up to it for some reason.

I've stared at this thread for a while now, and I simply can't choose my favorite 3 films of Hitchcock

he's one of the elite film directors and hasn't made a bad film and several classics
