Governments which start wars should first consider the suffering conflict brings to the lives of the innocent. Watching this agonizing film might help them think about that.
This is a fine movie and probably the definitive antiwar film.
I have tried to watch this three times, and have always wussed out after the first few minutes. You just know how sad and tragic it is going to be, and so you avoid the pain. The DVD sits in my Ghibli collection amidst Totoro and Howl's Moving Castle but will probably never be watched.
Interestingly, the director has stated that Fireflies is NOT intended as an anti-war film. But then, a lot of people uphold it as a fictionalized example of the horrors of war, and meaning is often in the eye of the perceiver.
Emotionally, it is very hard to watch this movie. If someone cries during it do not mock them.
It's a horrifying film. A good film.
I have this one on DVD, but I've never gotten around to watching it.
Anyone who watches this without crying has no soul...
