Title: Horror Films Of the Classic Era: Your Favorites and Not-So-Favorites
Post by: Ticonderoga 64 on October 12, 2018, 07:41:14 PM
As we enter the Halloween season, I thought it might be appropriate to discuss just what films of the classic era have made lasting impressions on us with their casts, imagery and premises. When I say the "classic" era, for sake of argument, I'm referring from the Silents through the end of the '40's: the Universals, the RKO horrors, entries from Columbia and Parmount studios and also the B studios such as Monogram, PRC and Republic.

There is/was something for everybody back in those days if you looked around: mad scientists, walking dead, werewolves, vampires, ghosts, witchcraft, man-made monsters and old dark house mysteries. Let's hear what films are near and dear to you.

A few of my favorites:

Nosferatu(1921)
Phantom Of the Opera(1925)
M(1931)
Dr.Jekyll & Mr.Hyde(1931)
White Zombie(1932)
The Most Dangerous Game(1932)
Mask Of Fu Manchu(1932)
Island Of Lost Souls(1933)
Mystery Of the Wax Museum(1933)
The Invisible Man(1933)
The Black Room(1935)
Mad Love(1935)
Son Of Frankenstein(1939)
Return Of Dr.X(1939)
The Ghost Breakers(1940)
The Devil Commands(1941)
The Wolf Man(1941)
Ghost Of Frankenstein(1942)
The Mummy's Tomb(1942)
Night Monster(1942)
Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man(1943)
Dead Men Walk(1943)
I Walked With A Zombie(1943)
The Seventh Victim(1943)
The Mad Ghoul(1943)
The Lodger(1944)
The Uninvited(1944)
The Body Snatcher(1945)

All have their fans and their detractors, but I happen to enjoy these ones most..

DRACULA (1931)
FRANKENSTEIN (1931)
KING KONG (1933)
NOSFERATU (1922)
THE WOLF MAN (1941)
WHITE ZOMBIE (1932)
THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI (1920)
THE BLACK CAT (1934)

From the time period those are most memorable to me.

The 50's are a time that stick out more remember loving House of Wax, Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Night of the Hunter (not technically horror but watch it as a kid), Them, The Thing from Another World, The Black Scorpion, Night of the Demon, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms,
The Blob, The Giant Behemoth, The Mummy (1959), Phantom of the Rue Morgue.  Family preferred the 50's sci fi monster movies and such so watched a lot plus Vincent Price.
