Title: Movies that were unmade.
Post by: Svengoolie 3 on October 22, 2018, 01:52:06 AM
Ok folks are buzzing about the new halloween movie and how it ignores every halloween movie since the first. This has been called A Good Thing.

It make me think of other movies that were later ignored in the series.

Off the top of my head I remember how the underappreciated "Superman returns" decided superman 3-4 never happened. Yeah, I was cool with that and still think it was a better movie than most people do.

Any other movies that ignored their predecessors because they were such turkeys? I mean a lot of James Bond movies had no continuity, really. In 'the man with the golden gun" bond retrieves a solar power device that supposedly would make oil obsolete as a power source. later bond is fighting over plots involving oil. But until the craig reboots no bond movie was really a direct sequel to it's precursor.

From my understanding the Highlander series did this. I've seen the first and the fourth but the second and third don't seem to play into the story arc.

I have a slight fondness for Superman III (put that down to Richard Pryor and Robert Vaughn being in it). I sort of wish the new Halloween had been a sequel to the second movie as I liked that one too. And yeah, I liked Superman Returns too, although I think they'd been angling towards the Justice League back then, and since the film didn't take them there they dumped it (never read anything that would prove that, just my own opinion).

I have heard several times over the years that James Bond is supposed to refer to a succession of agents. When one retires or dies another one takes his identity, although for myself I think they just make those movies and don't much care for a long running plot.

For unmade movies, I can't remember which one(s) were cut out, but I know some of the Exorcist sequels ignored other sequels (I think the 3rd ignored the 2nd, but I've not watched them).  Neill Blomkamp's Alien movie was going to ignore the 3rd and 4th instalments of that series. Jaws IV ignored the 3rd one. Pretty sure Hellraiser III was p**sing all over the first two entries.

I may be wrong but I don't think any of THE HOWLING sequels or the SCANNERS sequels are connected to the originals (or each other).

Would Troll be considered unmade by Troll 2?

Well, it's rare when a new movie in a series is made that ignores the earlier ones, the superman series where returns ignored 3&4 was the main one i knew of, I was wondering if others existed. Basically returns just flat out "unmade" 3&4 when it had ma kent still alive, and was amore or less direct sequel to 2 with a pregnant lois lane as a result of that movie.

The new Star Trek movies pretty much unmade all the other ones and most of the TV serieses (alternate universe my foot). They took a guy who said "I don't understand Star Trek" and had him make a movie.

Well the bastardizations created by jar jar Abrams we're a reboot.

I would say Halloween 2018 in essence ignores all sequels to the original movie so in a sense un makes them.

One I would have loved to have seen was The Bells of Hell Go Ting A Ling A Ling with Sir Ian McKellen.  :teddyr:
