It's an excellent work that does a lot of suggestive (not that kind of "suggestive"!) imagery.  The large sphere above the thing suggests an alien planet,  the things home world. The dark hole that seems to be behind it suggests the black depths of space it came thru to reach earth.

The fact MacReady is so small compared to it yet stands armed and ready to fight suggests his determination to stop the thing and save humanity no matter the odds or cost.

This really is a masterpiece of suggestive imagery.
