Title: Slashers... 1998 - 2002
Post by: zombie no.one on November 15, 2018, 01:25:48 PM
I've been watching a few slashers from this 'post-SCREAM' no man's land era for the genre. here's my thoughts on a few I've seen (re-watches in some cases)

I STILL KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMMER (1998)
- bit of a guilty pleasure. enjoy it way more than the first one

VALENTINE (2001)
- pretty awful. half slasher half chick-flick. really annoyingly dumb characters/plot

SCREAM 3 (2000)
- average. but then I never really liked the original SCREAM much, aside from the opening 10 minutes...

URBAN LEGEND (1998)
URBAN LEGENDS: FINAL CUT (2000)
- original is not that bad, but slightly falls apart halfway through and again seems to have elements of chick-flick about it. the sequel is forgettable

JASON X (2001)
- surprisingly decent by F13 standards, although obviously something of a departure (literally). one amazing kill scene!

any more to recommend? must be some better than these...

JOY RIDE and JEEPERS CREEPERS, both 2001.  Not bad.  Maybe JOY RIDE isn't altogether slasher and JC perhaps more monster movie.. still, check 'em out if you haven't.

seen the first one, but they're a bit after the timeframe I'm going for...first HATCHET was 2006. thinking more about the pre-SAW era...

I get confused with the HALLOWEENs but if Ressurection was the reality tv show one then that was terrible!! shockingly bad

I saw CHERRY FALLS and remember thinking it was too goofy/comedic. might rewatch

not heard of a few others there, so thanks

It has developed somewhat of a following, which has to do with the fact that the movie was heavily censored by the studio before submitting the film to the MPAA. The deleted scenes appear to be lost forever.

I've noticed over the years that slasher aficionados are very protective of Cherry Falls. They think it is a dark and disturbing gem in it's unrated form, which no one has seen. They praise the movie because it was butchered by a greedy studio, robbing it's ambition, artistic merits and impact it "might" had have. Gotta love them fanboys.

I can empathise with wanting to see scrapped footage that didn't get past the censors (i.e. FRIDAY 13TH PT 7), but there's no way that kind of stuff can transform a bad/average movie into a great one...
