Sort of, although (as with pretty much any news) there is a certain amount of hyperbole. There is no doubt the UK as a whole is facing a economic nightmare as a no deal Brexit still looks likely and we are being driven by rudderless leadership that is relying on a fear factor getting the deal we have on the table with Europe being accepted by Parliment. Everyone seems to be driving their own personal agenda over the good of the country (imagine if you had several trump's all competing with each other).

I am expecting to see the £ drop below the $ for the first time if we leave without a deal, meaning we fall back on WTO rules. Since the UK is a net importer this means prices are going to rise. I keep seeing rich people on TV telling everyone how this won't be problem.

Yeah, it isn't if you have a decent amount of cash. Since I earn a fair bit over the national average it shouldn't hit me too hard although we won't have as much spare money as before, and my holidays to the US are going to be a lot more expensive but for people already struggling it is going to be very tough.
