For my own part, I think the president henry fonda played in "fail safe" was the best american movie president. Faced with a apocalyptic situation that could result in the deaths of hundreds of millions and the end of america and russia, possibly much of human civilization, he came up with a brilliant solution that was clearly less terrible than the alternative, and implemented it even at great personal cost.
