"Dr. Terrors house of horrors" was brought up in anotber thread and itcs described as the first in a series of hammer anthology horror movies.
Ok, anthology movies.... Name some you liked.
Me? Ok, gotta open with "heavy metal". What's not to love about it?
Woody Allen's everything you wanted to know about sex was good. Man, John Caradine really would do anything for a check....
The twilight zone movie, yeah. Wasn't worth 3 lives tho....
Btw, night train to terror was awful, but could be remade decently.
There was a hammer horror anthology with peter cushing as a curio shop owner, at the end he kills a robber who shot him and then talks to the audience, inviting them to his shop and promising a free novelty with each purchase. What was that?

I think that's From Beyond The Grave: that wasn't a Hammer film though.
Creepshow wasn't bad. This scared the bejeezus out of me.

Twilight Zone - The Movie wasn't bad, either. The end scene freaked me out when I first saw it!

Stephen King's Cat's Eye was pretty good. For some reason, I thought the breath-stealing troll was super cool when I was a kid.

Interestingly, a search for 'anthology movies' on Google brings up a huge list, most of which were made in the 70s to the early 90s, and I've hardly seen any of them! Most of them seem to be horror anthologies, too.
Was there a trend for anthology horror movies in the 80s? The only ones I've seen are from that time period, and I haven't seen any since.
90s wise I liked Tales of the Dark Side, but that might be down to it having Debbie Harry in it.
Body Bags, from John Carpenter. Hosted by himself, and also starring Mark Hamill in one of the shorts, sporting a creepy mustache.

You got it. I guess i'm used to all English movies being hammer films...
the HOUSE THAT DRIPPED BLOOD (1971) was also from Amicus, and had Cushing, Lee, and Ingrid Pitt to boot!

This was the one with john pertwee as an actor who player vampires too much?
Yeah!
good lord, i own a TON of them. my all time faves though....monster club, house that dripped blood, from beyond the grave, tales from the crypt, asylum, dr.terror's house of horrors, flesh& fantasy, o'henry's full house, from a whisper to a scream, twice told tales...and one i can't think of, from the 40's. RC will know it, the guy in the wrap around story goes to a cottage in the country where people tell their tales, and he predicts bad ends for them...dammit! can't think of it!
and about 20+ more...i'm kind of a geek for short stories in any format.

"Iv'e never seen a clock like that before."

I've heard an "outer limits" movie is coming which will be an anthology.
Just don't hire john landis to direct any segments...
ah yes, gallery of horror..it's DREADFUL, but i love it for exactly that reason, lol!

asylum
yes! big fan of that one.
don't think TORTURE GARDEN has been mentioned yet (sorry if it has). like that one as well
in fact pretty much all the early to mid 70s ones. so campy/cheesy but good at the same time...
the problem is I tend to forget which individual segments have come from which film...
btw I highly recommend the episode 'And Now The Fearing' from Steve Coogan's DR. TERRIBLE'S HOUSE OF HORRIBLE series that went out in early 2000s. it's like a perfect homage/pastiche of the old hammer & amicus anthology movies. (it was also the best episode of that series by a mile)
yup, i've got torture garden too. and i do the same thing. fortunately my husband has an astounding memory and can usually pull the right one of the shelf for me.

KWAIDAN (1964) may be one of the best.
This came from f**king Toho! You know- Godzilla and company? I dunno- Toho made some beautiful movies. I think that's why even some of the giant monster movies are watchable today.
It's almost painting on film! And very f**king scary!

I don't really like anthology movies much; there's always one or two weak entries.
That said the last three choices, KWAIDAN, ROBOT CARNIVAL and AKIRA KUROSAWA'S DREAMS are all very good. KWAIDAN is probably the strongest anthology film all around.
Nightmares (1983) with Emilio Estevez.
I always thought The Twilight Zone The Movie was great until I read about the deaths on set :bluesad:
Up yours, John Landis: you should be in jail for murder.
I love a good anthology movie, but it seems like most of the ones I'd want to talk about have already been listed.

Just curious, what were your favorite segments from robot carnival and dreams? I think you're the first person to tell me they liked robot carnival....
Btw I liked the openingand end segment and theme to RC.

I saw it a couple of times on TBS in the early 90s when they were showing classic anime for a while. The two that made an impression on me were "Presence" and "Cloud." I'd like to see it again; it's been about 25 years now, but I still remember it.
I think it's on youtube. You might find a copy on amazon.

I looked up kwaidan and had seen it. Man, a couple of those stories were sad as hell, I did like the one about the guycs ears. The last one was kind of weird. I mean these guys get mad because this man drank their master's would in his tea?
"TELL YOUR MASTER TO KEEP HIS SOUL OUT OF MY TEA THEN!!! " :bouncegiggle:
