Title: Crime movies.
Post by: Svengoolie 3 on July 08, 2019, 11:39:36 PM
OK,  like some movies about crime? Discuss!

"In cold blood" was an incredibly  good  and powerful movie, based on a real crime. The movie was nearly as brutal as the crime it was based on,  the cold blooded murder of a family of 4 back in the days when this was very uncommon.  Despite being made in the days of heavy handed censorship the movie managed to be very powerful and hard hitting,  making it clear what was happening despite not being abelt to show a lot. This film was very realistic, it portrayed all the characters as human beings with all the flaws the species is heir to.  The criminals are not portrayed as monsters but as flaws and broken humans.  Even today some scenes are hard to watch, and the hard,  harsh black and white filming adds to the impact.

"The asphalt jungle".  An outstanding film noir about criminals, the people close tom them and the police who fight them. None of the characters are black and white even tho the movie is. Some criminals are shown to have good and nobel sides, some cops are portrayed as corrupt and brutal. Another movie that makes all the characters human. The only movie with marylin Monroe in it I like,  and I like it despite her not because of her.

"white heat" what can I say? A true classic. Cagney's protrayel of Cody jarrett as an absolute psychopath that still loves his mother is one of  the best acting jobs in history. Cagney made jarrett a terrifying character in some ways more frightening that many horror icons like Freddy krueger because he was in the end totally human.

When someone says crime movies these are what immediately come to mind:

Pulp Fiction, Heat, Reservoir Dogs and The Killing.

I like all sortsa crime movies. I will agree on WHITE HEAT.
My favorite of all time is the MALTESE FALCON, if just for the cast alone!

The death of one of it's stars has reminded me of the great crime movie "Juggernaut".

This was one well made movie,  a good plausible plot you could believe, gripping characters, great acting and you could tell they hired real experts as consultants.

It all added up to a really great "thriller".

I'm glad it avoided the hackneyed idea of a political or religious terrorist and had a villain who was just a plain old greedy Ahole who didn't mind killing lots of people for money. Making the brilliant villain simply a coldly logical, greedy man with no regard for human life made it easier to believe he could construct such advanced bombs.

I would recommend NUEVE REINAS, an argentinian movie that was unnecesary and badly remade as CRIMINAL in 2004. It's about con man, rather than straightforward robbery. Excellent overall, with great characters, and an amazing ending.

In the organized crime area, I stick to THE DEPARTED. Everything about it is great.

And a comedy about a particular crime, I go for NOTHING TO LOSE. I just love that movie, there's great chemistry between the two leads. And it also plays "ski-ba-bop-ba-dop-bop" from Scatman... how 90's can you get?

If you liked The Departed, I highly recommend Infernal Affairs on which it's based -- both are great

ATLANTIC CITY (1980)
What a great movie. A washed by gangster (Burt Lancaster) and the girlfriend of a dead dope dealer (Susan Sarandon) get involved with stolen drugs. I was impressed.

The Sicilian clan is a good crime movie made in a film noir style. It features a really over the top caper that is dine in such a straightforward way you can almost believe it could be done. Good acting, decent ideas and a twist ending add up to a worthy movie.

The Godfather 1 and 2 are fantastic! Stupendous cast with a fascinating story being unfolded on screen.

"Crime movies of the 1970s" is one of my favorite genres (although, I love crime movies from any decade). In addition to some that have already been mentioned, I love:

* ANGELS WITH DIRTY FACES (James Cagney, Pat O'Brien, Humphrey Bogart, Ann Sheridan)

* I WANT TO LIVE! (Susan Hayward)

* THE FRENCH CONNECTION (Gene Hackman)

* DOG DAY AFTERNOON (Al Pacino)

* THE GETAWAY (Steve McQueen, Ali McGraw)

* HOUSE OF GAMES (Lindsay Crouse, Joe Mantegna)

* THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE (Robert Mitchum, Peter Boyle)

* THE TAKING OF PELHAM 1, 2, 3 (Walter Matthau, Robert Shaw)

* BULLITT (Steve McQueen)

* MEAN STREETS (Harvey Keitel, Robert DeNiro)

Many, many others . . .

MASSACRE MAFIA STYLE (1974) aka the EXECUTIONER is fantastic!
It even stars Duke (BELA LUGOSI MEETS A BROOKLYN GORILLA) Mitchell!

The movie BREACH, about the investigation and apprehension of FBI agent turned traitor Ted Hanson, was very good.
