Title: Most Expensive Thing You've Ever Bought (Excluding Cars and Houses, etc.)
Post by: Olivia Bauer on July 20, 2019, 10:15:42 AM
Just bought a $700 drawing tablet with my savings and I plan on upstaging that with a $800 VR headset later down the line.

What's the most expensive thing you've bought? Keep in mind I'm not talking about anything relating to cars or houses.

My riding lawnmower. I spent $400 on it. It's broke down now.
I bought a furnace and ducts once. Cost me about 3 grand.

Back in 1992, I spent $400 on a life membership in the American Motorcyclist Association.

I haven't been able to afford a motorcycle in years.

A woman's freedom from slavery.

A church near me sponsored a mission to Cambodia that helped women caught in sex trafficking escape to better lives, and a woman and her criminal partners were running a brothel, and she told the missionaries she wanted out of the business and she'd sell all four of their sex workers for a certain amount of money "that day only" otherwise she was selling them to another sex trafficker who would be moving them to a part of Cambodia notorious for even more terrible goings on.

The missionary called the home church frantic for money to make this deal and because I was on a donors list (having been made aware of the horrors of sex slavery because someone I know helps fund the fight against it) I pledged enough to buy one contract and set a woman free.

It wasn't cheap but I'm glad I could.

I spent about $1,000 each on a couple of comic books around 10 years ago: TALES OF SUSPENSE #39 (1st appearance of Iron Man) and AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1. Sold them on eBay after a few months for very small profits. I should have held onto them as they are worth a lot more now.

My turquoise corset was $217 with tax that I bought on Black Friday at a Ren-fest.
