Title: LAKE MICHIGAN MONSTER (2019)
Post by: Rev. Powell on September 26, 2019, 09:11:10 AM
OK, I'm getting into the time of year when I start watching a lot of movies... not all of which are out yet. I think this one will probably get some kind of very limited release (it seems like a natural for Amazon Prime), but it's still playing the occasional film festival and I haven't heard anything about plans beyond that. It won the Audience Award for best International Feature at the Fantasia Film Festival.

A "sea captain" hunts for the monster in Lake Michigan that killed his father. This weirdo fetaure a mixture of monster movie cliches, deadpan Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker comedy (though even more absurd at times), and Guy Maddin's visual style (Maddin gets a "thanks" at the end); it works astonishingly well to hide its reported budget of only $7000 (!) The acting is amateur, but due to the ridiculous script, it doesn't really matter. The jokes aren't hilarious and the comic timing isn't perfect, but the dedication to utter nonsense keeps you engaged; it's constantly surprising. This is how you do a microbudget comedy. I'm not sure if the success here is due to genius or luck; I'm leaning towards the former. 3.5/5.
