I've noticed oftentimes Stephen King's best printed tales translate poorly to the big screen (with some strong exceptions!) and his imaginative novella Cycle of the Werewolf tripped over its own furry feet in its Reagan-era cinematic incarnation, Silver Bullet. I don't know how others felt but to me this was so bad it rang as a miscued comedy and was perhaps the least scary "strictly horror" King adaptation I've ever seen. This movie could have been played off as cool and a remake might someday achieve that, but as done thirty-odd years ago.....it's the bad kind of bad movie.
One distant bone-chilling howl out of five.
What suprises me the most is the film's rating at IMDb, it kept climbing and climbing over the years. Clearly many folks are fond of this film.
I think it was Ebert who thought Silver Bullet was a parody/comedy? :bouncegiggle: but raised his rating after some time.
For what its worth, it delivers the campy goods and has great practical effects. The fireworks scene on the bridge is one of my favorite scary movie scenes.
I got this movie as a gift from my dad last year.
I think it's alright, even if it is very predictable.
