Title: Were you required to register for the draft?
Post by: RCMerchant on November 23, 2019, 01:00:16 PM
I was supposed to. But I didn't.
I did almost join the Army, though. They wanted me to be a tunnel rat. I backed out.
I wasn't scared- I just don't like people screaming at me.

I signed a sheet in High School with a recruiter. He came to my house later.
I said " I'm only 5'2"! He said- "That's OK! We'll put you in a tank! Or clearing tunnels!"
I didn't know what clearing tunnels was until years later when my Uncle Ron, who was in Vietnam and was a tunnel rat, told me. And I didn't want to be in a tank. I wanted to be able to run!
So I backed out. Didn't matter anyway. Their was no war going on in 1980.

Didn't have to register.  But they were recruiting heavily at my HS for Desert Storm.  I think I told them I just had one question about the recruiting process and they took that as me wanting to sign up.  Then they wouldn't leave me alone.  I was ticked and didn't return their calls.

No, but after the 9/11 attacks they understandably recruited at the college I attended at the time.

I didn't have to register because I had already done early enlistment by the time I turned 18.
I served four years in the U.S. Navy, from 1982 to 1986.
I survived swimming with jellyfish, Filipino food, being buzzed by Soviet MIGs, and a collision at sea.

As an American living in Germany I had to register at the U.S. Embassy in Munich when I turned 18.

I think so.  There hasn't been a draft in 45 years.

But registering for Selective Service (AKA, The Draft) was the law at least through the mid 1990s.

I registered for it when I was in high school circa 1986-87. I was told that if I didn't, they'd come looking for me and I certainly didn't want that.

With my bad eyesight and flat feet I never would've cut it in the armed forces. The only time they would've been desperate enough to draft me would have been in the enemy was on the George Washington Bridge headed for New Jersey.

I had flat feet, hammer toe, and a pretty long psychiatric history....

Well, it was almost certainly 40 years ago I registered for the draft, as required by law.  Of course, there was no draft.

Yes, but I drew a high number, and the War in Vietnam was winding down, so they did not need as many draftees as before, so I was never called up. I don't remember when the draft ended, but, I do know that there has been some talk of reviving it, with women, this time, also being elegible for it.

I am quite a bit younger than my older brother, but I remember the lottery and my mother crying when David drew a high number.
I think the draft ended '73, '74...

I signed a paper with a recruiter- I didn't join or sign up for anything.  But the guy came to my Dad's house. Pushy guys! I wasn't into it! I was 18- I didn't wanna have people boss me around.
At that time I liked guns. I also read SGT.FURY comics as a kid. But I wasn't a kid no more.
There was nobody shooting at me. I didn't wanna shoot nobody either. ( Give me 5 years...then I wanted to kill everybody!  :tongueout:)

I was supposed to register they said at the post office. I never did. That was 1980.
I know the draft wasn't in effect- but you still had to sign up for it! In case they changed their minds, I reckon!

There was a war going on in my birth country of Zimbabwe (the former Rhodesia) although I'm not exactly army material, I would have considered it an honor to defend my country. The war ended when I was thirteen (1980) but I did want to join up.

If I had been drafted, I would have went. I wouldn't run.
But it might not have been too cool.Giving me a gun at that time in my life would not have been a good idea.

RC's post made me curious about how the Vietnam-era draft worked and so I researched that, then I found this simulator that let you enter your date of birth and it told you if you'd have been drafted, and my birth date came up low....so if I'd been a male living back then, I'd have been called up. Interesting. Thank goodness for my matching chromosomes.

No.

Fun fact though. Ted Nugent escaped the draft by intentionally s**tting his pants.

I enlisted at 18 and served four years in the army.  I spent a few months in Kuwait and was active during 9/11 but otherwise nothing major happened.

Once my active time was over, I joined the national Guard so i won't be reactivated and sent over seas.  See, when you sign up for the military you sign up for 8 years regardless of what your contracts says.  if you sign up for 4 years, that means four years active and another 4 inactive reserve.  "inactive reserve" can be reactivated anytime they want to and my job was in high demand at the time.  Because I didn't want to go back overseas, I went with the national Guard instead and used that to fufill my other four year obligation.

I registered when I turned 18, but at that point I had already agreed to join the Navy on a Delayed Enlistment Program when I graduated.  I served four years, from '82-86, and enjoyed my time in the service greatly.

Yes, I had to register. But I joined the army reserve straight out of high school anyway. I spent the summer after I graduated in basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey. All my friends were back home enjoying the summer while I was learning to read maps and administer first aid and stuff. I hated every minute of it, but in hindsight, I'd do it again. I lost about 20 pounds and was in excellent physical condition. And I learned a lot. I just did it when I was too young to really appreciate it.

No, because my chromosomes match. Take that, non-matching sorts!
