Title: FIDDLER ON THE ROOF (1971)
Post by: Allhallowsday on January 05, 2020, 11:51:55 PM
FIDDLER ON THE ROOF (1971)

Generally, I don't care for movie musicals, but I love FIDDLER ON THE ROOF which was on TCM tonight.
When it was done, dopey BEN MANKIEWICZ made another one of his "jokes" after advising that TOPOL did not win the Academy Award for Best Actor.
The "joke" was about Mossad kidnapping GENE HACKMAN (who did win) and HACKMAN "was never heard from again..."
That's funny?   :hatred:  Is that "joke" supposed to illustrate his Jewish solidarity?  Does he not know what happened that same year in Munich in 1972?
What a TURD!!!

This is one of my favorite musicals . . . and favorite movies, for that matter. I was able to see the live stage production during Topol's farewell tour.

Has anyone seen the stage version of the Lovecraftian spoof that was done of this 'Shoggoth on the roof'? I have a copy of the soundtrack.

I joined TCM's forum last night specifically to complain and point out that "joke".  The thread is gone.  One TCM member responded stating he hoped I would not turn out to be a "one hit wonder".  TCM's forum ensures it.

It's a favorite movie for me, too.  You are lucky to have seen TOPOL in the part of Tevya.  I saw a Broadway revival several years ago starring HARVEY FIERSTEIN and ROSIE O'DONNELL.  They were miscast, though the production was beautiful and we had great seats.  If I have a favorite musical, it's FIDDLER ON THE ROOF

Fiddler On The Roof sometimes played on TV in Australia in the late 70s and early 80s. The only memory I have of it is Topol in this exact scene, which was in the TV spot for the movie.

But my real memory of Topol is in Flash Gordon (1980).

Bizarrely, I sometimes think that Erick Avari (Stargate 1994) is Topol! WTH!

I remember a TV commercial in the 1970s that used the song "Tradition" in its advertising jingle. I think it was a commercial for spaghetti sauce (I'm too lazy to look for it online at the moment). When I finally saw the movie and heard that song, the first thing that popped into my mind was the TV commercial.

The graveyard scene makes the movie.
