Title: Stinging insects
Post by: Rev. Powell on July 27, 2020, 07:56:42 AM
So yesterday I'm at my brother's grilling pork chops when suddenly I have a sharp pain in my shin. I was stung by something, dildn't see what it was.

It was just annoying at first, but in about five minutes it swelled up and it started itching uncontrollably. Worse yet, I started itching all over my body, to the point where I couldn't stand still and everyone was looking at me funny. I even got chills at the same time. This lasted for almost and hour and then I was back to normal.

Obviously I had an allergic reaction to whatever stung me. I used to be allergic to fire ants as a kid, but I never had a single bite to this to me before.

You can't really tell from this quick pic I snapped, but you can see the bite and the pink radius around it. Because of the angle you can't see how swollen it was.

I'm sure other people have worse horror stories about being stung, but this hadn't happened to me in a long time, since I was a kid.

My brother's a doctor. He gave me some benadryl and said as long as I wasn't having trouble breathing I just had to ride it out. Like I said, after an hour it was fine.

For some reason (my odor?) I don't get stung by insects much. When I was a teen I drank out of a can of coke that had like 3-4 wasps inside. They stung me in my lips. My mouth was swollen but I didn't have an allergic reaction. I put a bag of ice on my mouth and the swelling went down after like 45 to 60 minutes.
Just today a colleague called in sick because he was stung in both his legs. He send a pic and his legs were badly swollen.

Whoa! That's quite the reaction!  :buggedout: Handy to have an MD in the family.  Glad it wasn't worse.

Glad you're better Rev.  Bees suck.  I constantly check all my eaves to see if wasps made nests.  If there are any, the Raid spray foam stuff is awesome.  Haven't been stung in many a year.  My folks' house had a long history of bees.  We had hornet nests in the greenhouse and yellow jackets in the house, and a beekeeper neighbor had some escapees wander over to our yard, along with the queen.  The sky was filled with bees!  Ugh!

We got honeybees in the eaves. They don't bite nobody.
We got bumble bees float around.
