The 1980's metal head in me believes that making a kick ass Satanic movie should be the easiest thing in the world. Yet time and again I find myself watching a movie involving Satanism only to find it sucks ass. Like Al Adamson. If you watch an Al Adamson movie it is already guaranteed to suck ass. Then you throw an inherently interesting topic in their like Satanism and it just ups the level of suckage. I never realized Satanism could be so boring and mundane until I saw some of Adamson's work.
Okay Ted V. Mikels might give Adamson a run for his money.
Anyway, what are some actually good/great movies about Satanism? Other than some obvious ones. Like Rosemary's Baby is a pretty big one. The Devil Rides Out is pretty awesome and considerably less known (though well known to Hammer fans).
A little off topic but what made me think of this is the Hammer House of Horror episode Guardians of the Abyss. I found it to be one of the weaker offerings of the series. So it made me reflect that while I go into these with somewhat high expectations I am rarely left satisfied. On the TV end of things there is also the season 3 premiere of Night Gallery which as far as I can recall is the only time Rod Serling and Vincent Price collaborated in any capacity. It's a roughly 30 minute long episode which helps. I enjoyed it, but I think a big part of that was the novelty of 4 things I enjoy (Serling, Price, Night Gallery, and Satanism as a Story Device) all being mixed together rather than the episode on its own merits.
I never seen a Satanic movie by Adamson . Even NURSE SHERRI just had a woman possessed by an evil spirit.
No satanism. And don't say SATAN'S SADISTS- that's a biker movie.

Honestly every time I watch an Adamson movie it feels like my brain just melted. I know pentagrams and talks of the devil seems to be common motifs.
I recall Doctor Dracula seemed more like a Satanic movie than a conventional vampire movie after I watched it. Actually it seemed more like bad porn with all the good stuff removed which is what it actually was. Anyway, f**k if I'll watch it again!

I really have to re-watch Beyond the Door. Amazon Prime had it fairly recently. Hopefully they still do :)
On a related note on a good day you can find the in name only sequel/cash-in Beyond the Door III AKA Amok Train selling on eBay for about $5 free shipping included. It's by no means conventionally good, but it's a lot of fun. I'd imagine anyone visiting this site could get a kick out of it :)
Are you looking for movies with an authentic depiction of Satanism? Or movies with references to Satanism and Satan in general?
There aren't many with the former, if any at all. For the latter, feel free to watch:
- The Devil's Rain (1975)
- Lust For A Vampire (1971)
- Hammer House Of Horror TV series, a few episodes deal with a Satanic cult or two
Wikipedia has an interesting list of Satanic films!

as well as films about Satanism

Try ENTER THE DEVIL (1972) A cheapie made in Texas!

Thanks for the recommendations! I'm actually waiting for The Devil's Rain to come in the mail. It's been weeks now with the USPS delays but hopefully soon :) I may have to track down Lust for a Vampire.
As for the Hammer episodes I actually found the Satanism one(s) to be some of the weaker episodes. I was excited when I finally got the chance to watch the series as I had been looking forward to it for YEARS. I have to admit I was a little disappointed in it. A lot of the same basic stories shows like The Twilight Zone and Tales from the Crypt told in half the time. The Peter Cushing episode (The Silent Scream) is pretty great though. So it's not all bad.
As for what I'm looking for, I'd like to be as broad as possible. So things that accurately depict Satanism as well as wild and crazy stuff and everything in between is all welcome

Cool stuff and fun poster
I thought Ready or Not (2019) was excellent though they are not dead serious about the satanic aspect of the film.

I saw it on TV in the 1970s: it really creeped me out.
In one of the biggest what the hell (no pun intended) moments of my childhood, one of the more disturbing appearances of Satan in a movie came when Satan inexplicably and damn creepily showed up in the claymation kids movie called The Adventures of Mark Twain. Don't believe me it's creepy, look a clip up on YouTube.
Also, here's a reference I'm sure you guys can ID but there was this vivid color movie, not feature length, from circa 1928, in which the devil was in Hell making it sound like such a cool place to be people were going to a club and sliding down into Hades. The devil's secretary wore a bright red Jazz Age short dress, the devil was on the phone a lot, and Al Capone was referenced. Know which film I mean?

That is my favourite part of that movie.

Is it Madam Satan? The film referenced sounds very familiar and very awesome! I'd love to track down whatever it is :)
^I think ER is referencing some real obscure s**t.
I don't think it's MADAM SATAN (1930) she said what she seen was a short film.
That would be a chore to dig up what old black and white short that is!

Yeah I'd be curious though :) I looked up the Madam Satan summary and it doesn't sound like what is described in the first post at all. I was hoping it was right though since it would be easy enough to find :)
Edit: And I'm already pretty sure I found it! The Devil's Cabaret (1930). YouTube has some clips, but I haven't found the full thing online anywhere yet.

I think it is The Devil's Caberet, and TCM runs it sometimes. Definitely worth seeing.
Is this a clip?

When I saw the title for this thread the first movie title that jumped into my brain was "To the Devil a Daughter" starring Christopher Lee and Nastassja Kinski. Its been a long time since I've seen it, so not sure how good its stood up to the test of time.

I think my favourites are "The Omen" (original) and John Carpenter's "Prince of Darkness".
The first one is a must-see if you are into classic movies. If not, you may find it too tame.
The second one is... unusual, even if you've seen other Carpenter films like "Halloween". It involves a group of scientists studying a container that, according to ancient lore, may contain Satan. I've come to like it over repeated viewings, but it's pretty weird.

I think it's more like the container holding the Anti-Christ, but that's the gist of it. It was really scary when I first saw it as a teenager. When I saw it again decades later as an adult, not so much.
