The TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE scared the s**t out of me when I was 12. I seen It at the Strand in 1974. So did the EXORCIST. (Heavy sigh) To be young and be scared again...
To a kid, this s**t wasn't Frankenstein- this was apes**t crazy!

I find and found THE EXORCIST more shocking than scary. It's very important and a great movie.
There may be more disturbing, but THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE is without doubt the scariest movie I've seen.

The Last Man on Earth (1964) - first scariest movie seen on TV. It literally gave me nightmares.
Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971) - first scariest movie seen at theater. We had to leave halfway through because the film was too scary for my sister and me.
The Exorcist (1973) - first scariest movie seen at theater without leaving, but I was hiding and covering my eyes most of the time.
The Texas Chain Saw Masasacre (1974) - first scariest movie seen on video. Pretty intense experience.
The Evil Dead (1981) - first scariest movie seen on video but covering my eyes again. Back in rental days The Evil Dead was a dare-you-to-watch movie, along with the first Faces of Death.
Why is this in bad movies though?
^ Because some BAD movies scared me. The first time I seen DON'T LOOK IN THE BASEMENT in 1973, it scared the s**t out of me!
" A mothers love, twisted into a shape of malignent evil. ( I'm sure I didn't spell that right).
http://youtu.be/KtNc7K7mNa4 (http://youtu.be/KtNc7K7mNa4)
Can't say I've been genuinely scared by a bad movie ever, unless it had a jump scare.
^ When the pinhead monster jumps out of the closet in the BRAIN THAT WOULD'T DIE scared the s**t out of me. My step brother Jimmy ran out of the room! And this was on a black and white TV!
http://youtu.be/-nz2JfJ9Mm0 (http://youtu.be/-nz2JfJ9Mm0)
To an 11 year old kid- this stuff was gruesome!
CARNIVAL OF SOULS was damned scary when I was a kid. Great movie, it's also kinda bad.
CASTLE OF BLOOD scared me too when I was very young.
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD scared the hell out of me when I was about 14. I saw it on a "late" broadcast ABC-TV out of NY mid 1970s. I watched it alone and all the B&W TV watching in the movie worked perfectly on my family's B&W TV in the basement... I went to bed looking for a car to drive by...
I saw a lot of sh!t in that era that was scary then : CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS THE OTHER DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK THE NIGHT STALKER GRAVE OF THE VAMPIRE LET'S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH ...
^ Every one of those movies you mentioned scared the s**t out of me.
LET'S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH was creepy as hell.

I think I've said this before but the SA film Jannie Totsiens [Johnny Farewell] remains the scariest film I've ever seen.
Reasons are:
1. It is almost too real and in a real situation (a lunatic asylum). Even the opening credits are scary.
2. Someone different (a maths professor) enters the environment causing all kinds of issues.
3. Horror, suicide and attempted murder follow (this was heavy stuff for SA in 1970!)
4. Strangely, despite the horror, there is quite a bit of humor: not much, but it is there.
It's on full on Youtube.
^ Groovy! I'll have to check it out!
Some that have really creeped me out over the last 20 years or so:
THE RING
SINISTER
JEEPERS CREEPERS
HEREDITARY
MIRRORS
GRAVE ENCOUNTERS (far scarier than a film shot on a $60,000 budget should be!)

The only reason that movie creeps me out is because looking in hind sight about the guy who made it.
I will never watch that movie again.
Agree with you there RC.
When I was six, this one scared me. I do recall enjoying the feeling. Around the same time, I watched 'Jaws' and although the film itself wasn't frightening I do remember being afraid to go to the toilet lol.

And then at age eleven, this one came along. Alas none of the sequels (or the remake), would keep the level of frights up. I'd always wondered if the reason this one got under my skin was because of the night terrors I had when I was much younger.

Unfortunately, they don't tend to make good horror films about the kinds of things that would scare me.
Nowadays the only movie that still manages to make me uncomfortable is IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS. I simply love that trip into the corners of the mind.
I do remember from when I was a kid being extremely scared after seeing PUPPET MASTER. Yeah, the same one reviewed on this site. I perfectly recall watching it with my mom and she covered my eyes in the part where the couple is in the bed and the guy is tied up, lol. I wish society were more like that in these times, instead of exposing kids to sex all the time.
Another one who chased me everywhere was the Michael Myers mask, with those empty eyes of his, covered in darkness. I remember I couldn't even stand to watch him, simply awesome.
Ah, childhood.

Victor Salva: what a schmuck.
for some reason I was really disturbed by Children of the Corn

I saw
JAWS new its summer so I was going to be 14. Aside from the jump scares, you forget all that after the boat scenes. Walking home past the large runoff pipe with water dribbling out of it was spooky! Always a great movie!

I never understood the popularity of
A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET. I saw it new in the theater and was not scared by it much, thought it was disappointing. Frankly, it's corny. :teddyr:
^ I felt the same way about the FRIDAY the 13TH series. I liked the first NIGHTMARE movie- after that- blah.
After Freddy turned into an ugly Don Rickles... the puns ruined it.

I actually saw most of those
NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET films and without doubt, the best was the first.
I do remember the one sequel with the "kids" who had "problems" including the girl who is "bad" in her dreams and says to Freddy:
"Let's dance a$$hole!"I think I've been quoting her for 30 years...
FRIDAY THE 13TH movies were all pretty lame for me, though there are moments in a few I do enjoy. The first was the best, the second is what really gave us Jason another series I never appreciated.

I think DREAM WARRIORS is actually very good, almost as good as the first one. The rest of the series is a disaster, except from FREDDY VS JASON which is pure awesomeness. I consider NEW NIGHTMARE rather boring to be honest.
I really enjoy Dream Warriors too - actually it's my favourite of the series although the first Nightmare on Elm Street movie is clearly the scariest IMO.
Films that legit scared me as a kid/teen:
Predator (1987) - the skinned people, the big reveal of Predator
Superman III (1983) - the computer attaching itself scenes freaked me out as a kid.
Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi (1983) - the Rancor/Jabba stuff
Salem's Lot (1979) - the kid outside the window scenes
Dracula (1979) - vampires keep me awake many nights as a kid- think I accidentally stumbled across a vampire movie marathon on TV back then.
The Brides of Dracula (1960)
Dracula Has Risen From the Grave (1968)
The Shining (1980)- this freaked me out - the twins, the blood, the axe
Poltergeist (1982) - the tree, the clown, even the TV....
Other films that legit scared me over the years:
Black Sabbath (1963) - "I'm hungry" so much in this one is dread scary in terms of visuals and story...
The Woman in Black (1989) -I think this is one of the absolute scariest of them all! So underrated...
Black Christmas (1974) - this one ranks highly for me too...a maniac on the loose, arguably one of the first of its kind.
Halloween (1978) - isn't this a given?
Ringu (1998) - simple concept but it really works...
Ju-on: the Grudge (2002) - same here...
Jurassic Park (1993)
Alien (1979)
Kill, Baby, Kill (1966)
Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (1922)
The Conjuring (2013)
Jaws (1975)
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
The Blair Witch Project (1999)
Paranormal Activity (2007)
The Haunting (1963)
Jacob's Ladder (1990)
Child's Play (1988)
Intruders (1992)
The Changeling (1980)
The Reptile (1966)
Seconds (1966)
Ghostwatch (1992)
While not typically what you think of here, films like The Day After (1983), Threads (1984), Miracle Mile (1988), and No Blade of Grass (1970) are scary in many ways too....I'm sure there's many I'm forgetting here too...

Films that legit scared me as a kid/teen:
Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi (1983) - the Rancor/Jabba stuff
the bit in STAR WARS (I think the first one?) where they're stuck in what looks like some kind of flooded elevator shaft and the walls suddenly start coming inwards, absolutely scared me as a kid
so did what I'm guessing must've been the trailer (or one of the trailers) for GHOSTBUSTERS where Slimer races towards the screen. petrified! had kind of forgotten about that...
remembered another film that legit scares me - or at least creeps me the flip out, in a good way - as an adult, and that's VALERIE AND HER WEEK OF WONDERS
This is a tough one, but the first one that comes to my mind is Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer.
It feels very real with the killer not even revealing the reason he does what he does. On top of that, there's no good guy in the movie. There's not even a sign that the police are even out to get them. They just kill people because they feel like it.
The whole movie has a very dirty greasy feeling to it with no resolution.
Bucky Larson -- that thing still haunts me :bluesad: :bluesad: :bluesad:
I'll go with JaseSF on KILL BABY, KILL! (1966)!
This movie reminds me of Black Sabbath's first album.
http://youtu.be/8yYbnI-GqXA (http://youtu.be/8yYbnI-GqXA)
Remember another film that scared me as a kid - The Wizard of Oz (1939) - the Wicked Witch, the flying monkeys, even on some levels the munchkins...
Another one that creeps me out is The Other (1972) - very unsettling atmosphere...another like that that comes to mind is The Innocents (1961).
Of those I mentioned above, Salem's Lot, Predator, Dracula Has Risen From the Grave, Intruders, The Day After, Poltergeist all succeeded in giving me nightmares...now that I really think about I think Maximilian from The Black Hole (1979) was yet another one who haunted my dreams. Also recall Big Trouble in Little China (1986) also managed to scare me silly as a kid too...
The Thing from Another World scared me when I first watched it and I've always found the orchestral transition from RKO & Winchester Pictures Corporation to the tittle & opening credits disturbing. I watched this film on TCM with my daughter when she was 10 years old and this part of the film and the scene where they figure out they've got a flying saucer gave her nightmares for almost a week, I believe it's the music that enhances the scare factor.

The Little Shop of Horrors (80's version)
Saw it on TV in 1st or 2nd grade & it instilled a great fear of plants in me. I could not go near bushes for weeks.
Black Sabbath(1963) not the whole film, but the "A DROP OF WATER" segment really terrified me as a kid for years, because of this:
