The Associate Justice of the Supreme Court appointed by President Clinton passed away at the age of 87.
While I disagreed with her on many matters of governmental policy, I admired her feisty spirit and personal integrity.
I also liked the fact that her closest friend on the court was her polar opposite in judicial philosophy, Justice Antonin Scalia.
Here's to the example they set: That political and ideological adversaries need not be enemies, and that Americans who differ from us are still Americans.
Good night, Ruth, and rest well.
I thought that was a nice summation, indy.
I always thought it was mean of Conan to superimpose her face on pictures of Gollum.

Thank you, my friend!
Ruth Bader Ginsberg is and always will be a credit to the judicial system and an example of what it can and should be.
I am proud of the lady, and a longtime admirer. Good night RUTH, you warranted the respect any person could muster. God bless you!

Look up Judge Amy Coney Barrett. The right is really pushing for her as a frontrunner to replace Ginsburg because Barrett is a pro-lifer. Yet apparently even Barrett believes that Roe Vs Wade will not be overturned even if she were appointed to the Supreme Court. It doesn't really matter much anyway because abortion clinics are never going to go away regardless. Roe vs Wade has only ever been used as a scare tactic to get more liberal judges nominated and appointed in federal courts; it was never about the abortions themselves when you think about it.

I've long said that neither political party seriously wants to abolish abortion - it's too useful to them as a recruiting tool.

The reason Trump is strong-arming a Justice is because if he loses- he wants the court on his side. He thinks they will back him if he loses. He's going to contest the election if he loses.
Won't happen no matter what. Not all people are as shallow as him. He forgets that most folks who were on his side now are under arrest or quit. Or writing books, so history won't view them as scumbags (Cohen).
If he throws his friends and business buddies under the bus- you really think he gives a f**k about you?

Nothing was stopping Obama from nominating someone anyway...well, aside from being a weak sauce President. Maybe he had to get his boy Michelle's permission first. :teddyr:
Obama MADE a nomination - and the Senate wouldn't give his candidate, Merrick Garland, an up or down vote.
They let his nomination die in committee because it was an election year, even though the election was seven months away.
That's why people are mad - the same bunch that insisted the people should have a say in the composition of the court when the election was six months off are now insisting that the people should have NO voice, when the election is six weeks away.
Trump is gonna take heat for this no matter what he does. If he pushes the nomination through before the election, furious liberals will turn out in droves, and wavering conservatives will see less reason to vote for him, since the only reason many principled people have supported him is the fact that they want a more conservative court.
If he decides to wait till after the election, he will anger his base, motivate Biden supporters to turn out so they can secure Ginsberg's seat for a liberal, but he will possibly pick up a few conservative leaning waverers.
But either way, I think he will anger more people than he pleases.

On the contrary, I believe that most conservatives are happy that Ginsburg is finally out of the way and not wasting a spot on the Supreme Court, and that she will be replaced by a conservative and that the Supreme Court will lean more to the right for the foreseeable future. People may not like Trump that much, heck I don't even like him, but no one can deny the fact that things are now looking much better for conservatives now that Ginsburg is gone from the highest court in the land.
America is roughly 40% right, 40% left, and about 20% in the middle.
I think the court functions best, historically, when its ideological balance reflects that of the country.
When everyone is represented, no one feels left out.
To say Ginsberg "wasted" a spot on the court is to spit on her legacy and to write off the views of a large portion of our country.

Oh spare me the melodrama! If you're too sick to work then stay tf home. Ginsberg was nothing more or less than a public servant, and you're treating her like she was the Mother Teresa. She should have been put out to pasture during the 2nd term of the Obama Administration, but the Democrats only pressured her to stay on the SCOTUS because they were certain that President Hillary was going to be the one to retire Ginsberg. Rest In Peace, but the old dingbat had outlived her usefulness a few years ago, just like some of these old fossils from yesteryear:
QuoteThe late Antonin Scalia waved off the idea of limiting the terms of justices as "a solution in search of a problem," but the problem is not an imaginary one: Some justices really have clung to their positions long after their mental faculties have left them. Justice Henry Baldwin remained on the court for nearly a dozen years after his 1832 hospitalization for "incurable lunacy." One of Justice Nathan Clifford's colleagues described him as a "babbling idiot" in the final years before his death in 1881. Justice Stephen Field in the mid-1890s and Justice Joseph McKenna in the early to mid-1920s each reportedly spent the end of their tenures in a haze.

Honestly, that's like me repeating what I so often heard in college in New England: "All Canadians do is whine, whine, whine about their betters while they send their sick old people down here for medical treatment out of their joke of a health care system and come down and get drunk and brag about their hockey teams and try to pick up American women who think they're pale, ski cap wearing clods."
I thought that was a mean thing for locals to say about Canadians, most of whom have always seemed nice to me. (With exceptions.)
Cheap shots at another person's country aren't good breeding and don't reflect well on upbringing. Constructive criticism... perhaps, but if you're a foreigner and not part of a nation, what reason do you have to insult it? What business is it of Canada's who the US elects? What place is it for me to tell what I think of Trudeau?
For the record what you posted offended me. I've been to four continents, plus New Zealand, and rule one of courtesy is you don't insult someone else's nation. The French would go postal on someone for that, as well they should. A Scotsman once told me when I was over there that he'd rather someone bad-mouth his mother than his country, though he'd kick someone's arse for either one, and that's national (and maternal) pride lacking in many Americans.
Talking American politics, okay, but that was a low blow. It p**sed me off. It crossed a line from giving an opinion to insulting.

Interesting question. Buddy of mine wants to join The Satanic Temple and apparently one of its seven tenets is the right to free expression includes the right to offend. I "think" I agree there. My patron saint Joan Rivers would probably say she'd agree with that, so....she's my barometer.
I do think it's best to be tactful in life though sometimes I get mad, go after people, beat down the desire to challenge others to first blood duels, that sort of thing. I'm actually very nice.

Anyway I'll be going home in a few days and won't have the time to kill posting here, so I hope you're alive when and if I return here, RC, and I hope your heart will handle November.
If you are not rattling off your accomplishments, you are pinpointing your kindnesses. And you can't resist a final swipe.

You write that to be annoying; and because you find both of
US annoying. Nonetheless, Ron and I would kill each other. These days, we just fight and not with civility. Actually, perhaps you are being obtuse. I believe evidence should speak for itself and I avoid explanations. You are, however, not the only one who might take up a cause.
It's true though, RC can be like a dog that bites you sometimes for no reason.
So, what's your cause going to be, John?
Quote from: ER on September 24, 2020, 05:24:36 PM
Second thought, it'd be wrong to take something from you when you have so little. You're an impoverished addict in poor health, and while I don't dislike you Ronny, I have often felt sorry for you, and that's why if you look back you'd see more than not I've taken up for you and been nice to you. Well thank you for your support! :twirl:
I'll take Johns' support then yours any day.
Sure. I wish you'd notice I'm on your side most of the time.
Sure you are.
Don't play that card on me. Don't work, man.

Annnieway, I'm going to go throw some darts before bed and watch my co-workers tie on a few.
Give yourself some credit. Jeez, if I was out to bash on you I could do a better job. Night.
A troll who has been here twelve years? Ron, really, you're meaner to a lot more people than me. Sober up, man, lose the paranoia, and go smell the flowers, look at the sky. Be happy.
And now I really do have to log off.

To answer your question which was directed at me, no, it is not bad to stand up for your morals.
Your second question is nonsense; an uncivil person is incapable of morality, a moral person is naturally civil.

RC,
ER too. Concurrence is scant these days. We all make mistakes and need to learn the lesson of civility. Sometimes, we are humbled and must accept such demonstrating humility. When we refuse to acknowledge our own errors, it is merely egoism.
