Title: What is your Favorite bad holiday Movie?
Post by: kornula on December 14, 2020, 05:35:52 AM
One of my favorite bad Christmas movies is "SANTA CLAUS VS. THE DEVIL"

At least this version of Santa is consistent with his ablities.  Lupita's story is sad when applied to the real world.

surely they could've called it SANTA VS SATAN?

I never really categorise movies in terms of 'holidays', but I guess SILENT NIGHT DEADLY NIGHT 2 might be in with a shout for me...

THE MUTILATOR was orginally called FALL BREAK . not sure if that's considered a holiday in the states. we don't really have it here

Santa Claus Vs The Martians.

I see three main contenders.

SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS - Stupid, watchable, kind of funny. Comfort food.

SANTA AND THE ICE CREAM BUNNY - The single most WTF Christmas movie ever. Terrible and hard to watch, but amazing.

SANTA CLAUS (1959) [AKA SANTA CLAUS VS. THE DEVIL] - Terrific fun, my choice. The only issue is, I'm not 100% sure it's a bad movie. It's much better made than the other two with actual sets, costumes, props, even a dance number. As Kornula says, Lupita is actually sweet and touching, and so is the neglected rich kid. A lot of what people say makes it "bad" really comes down to culture clash issues:  René Cardona didn't follow American Santa Claus mythology, but reinvented him for Mexican culture.

I should add that we all may want to reserve judgment until we see DIAL CODE SANTA CLAUS, a newly rediscovered 1989 French movie that should be out on DVD/Blu-ray soon.

It has large, well-made sets, but the camerawork's kinda boring. The dancers could've used a bit more practice too.

It is fun, & it does a lot to flesh-out/update the Santa mythos, but it's still below good. I might throw it in with some of AIP's higher-budget efforts.

For some reason, Comet TV is playing giant mutant shark movies by day, & playing Santa Claus Vs The Martians after midnight..........

I haven't seen Morozko since I was a kid....

There's a new one I really like called How Murray Saved Christmas......

never heard of this but I'm impressed by the trailer... it seems to know it's bad? not in a nudge nudge wink wink way, more a 'oh jeez we actually made this now I guess we have to promote it' kind of way!

The Santa stuff is what I love about this odd movie.

The kids stories are actually sad when you take a second to think about them.

It's really bad. I personally didn't find it fun-bad.

By coincidence, this just showed up in my email: https://www.pastemagazine.com/college/christmas/the-20-worst-christmas-movies-of-all-time/ (https://www.pastemagazine.com/college/christmas/the-20-worst-christmas-movies-of-all-time/)

I kind of like CHRISTMAS EVIL, though.

only seen a couple of those

A KARATE CHRISTMAS MIRACLE could be my favourite festive title yet :)

not on that list but I've just remembered DON'T OPEN TILL CHRISTMAS which is awesomely bad. starring and directed by the bad guy from PIECES, and it's of a similar style to that

Watching The Magic Christmas Tree. Not a bad concept, but those gag sequences aren't funny, & they take up a lot of time.

Edit: Finished it. It could be cut down to a decent half-hour special. Kids were decent actors.

I love SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT. (The first one)  The actor in the lead role did a fantastic acting job with what he was given.   Shame he didn't get more substantial acting gigs after that.

I finally broke down and watched THE CHRISTMAS SHOES. It's a terrible story...but it was not as sappy as I expected.  in fact, one might say it was... pedestrian.
