Title: Your 50 Favorite 'Cult' Movies
Post by: RCMerchant on January 26, 2021, 10:16:57 AM
Inspired by the good Rev's post about 50 Best Cult movies.
Rev is right- they don't go before the 1970's. Eh. I reckon some young whippersnapper wrote that list.

Mine-

1. PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE (1959) How did that shmuck who wrote that list miss this?
2. ROBOT MONSTER (1953)
4. A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (1970)
5. MANIAC (1934) " The gleem is gone!"
6. REEFER MADNESS (1936)
7. PINK FLAMINGOS (1972) John Waters invented the modern 'cult' film! How the f**k did they not include this???
8. EL TOPO (1970)
9. NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968)
10. GLEN OR GLENDA? (1953)
11....I'll list more later

What are some of your favorite 'cult' films?

I like all those. Except maybe PINK FLAMINGOS. (It's got a few great scenes and some totally reprehensible ones. I like both FEMALE TROUBLE and DESPERATE LIVING better.)

I'll add NIGHT OF THE HUNTER. Big flop at the time, now it's considered a classic.

And MANDY. The newest movie in the cult canon.

Let me second GLEN OR GLENDA?, which I actually prefer to PLAN 9.

One definition is a movie that was not a mainstream or critical success when it was released, but later became a big favorite among a devoted group of fans.

In no particular order...

1.  Repo Man (1984) Alex Cox only good movie.

2.  The Forbidden Zone (1980)  German impressionistic style madness!

3.  Liquid Sky (1982)  Vinegar Syndrome did an amazing job remastering and transfering it digitally!

4.  The Rythtmatist (Stewart Copland, drummer from The Police) wanders about the continent of Africa searching for "the beat/rhythm of life"   ..basically fun nonsencical road trip movie with music)

5. Blade Runner (all 5 official versions)

6. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas  (Its still difficult to believe this is a Terry Gillilam film.  It's not his usual style..but he was the perfect man for directing the undirecable/unfilmable book)

7.   Heck, every single one of Terry Gilliam's films were not commercial or critical sucesses.  I love them all

8.  Dune (1984  Lynch did manage to get the cast nearly perfect.. except Stings role.  The movie is kind of a mess..but it is not exactly a filmable book)

9.  Star Trek; The [slow] Motion Picture.   Yes, the story and film are tedious.  Yes, the movie is special effects heavy.  Yes, it is still not criticall well liked to this day.. for obvious reasons. Yes, the special effects scenes are amazing on the big screen.

10.  Iron Sky (2011)  I didn't hear about this amazing movie until 2015 or so.  Wish I could have seen it in the theater.

11.  Andy Warho's "Dracula"  (even though its really directed by Paul Morresy...it still gets billed as "his" film)

12.  Eating Raoul (1982)  Paul Bartell did not get to make enough movies IMHO!

13.  Death Race 2000 (1977) Again, Mr. Bartell did not get to make enough Movies!

14. The Pope Must Die(t) (they were forced by the Vatican to add a (t) because it was "distasteful" implying that the Pope might get assassinated.

15. Forgotten Silver (1995) Peter Jackson's finest film IMHO.  So far, only film nerds know about this gem.

16.  Serial Mom (1994) Most of John Waters movies have never done well at the box office. However, his fans at least line up to have given him work until 2000.  This is my all time Favorite of Mr. Waters.. it combines the senseiblities of his older works with his post "Hairspray" days.

17.  Blade Runner (yeah, it is that good)

18.  Eraserhead (it can lull  you to sleep, but in a good way. PS, did you know the script is only 20 pages long?)

19.  El Topo (gotta love Jordolowsky)

20.  Brain Candy [Kids in the Hall] movie.  It needed a second draft..but some of the sketches/scences were still good.

21.  Monty Python's the Meaning of life.  (also suffers the same problem "Brain Candy" did.

22. Monty Python and the Holy Grail.  It did well enough at the box office, but only to its rabid, dedicated fan base.

23.  Citizen Kane (it falls under the cult film definition as it tanked at the box office and was initially critically panned.. mostly by Hersts bidding)

24.  Convoy (1978) I was shocked to learn this was directed by Sam Peckinpah. It gets mixed reviews to this day.. which baffle me. it's a highly underrated film imho

25.  Bedknobs and Broomsticks (its a guilty pleasure fueled by nostalgia mostly)

I'll come up with 25 more eventually...

Some more...!

17. FREAKS (1932) This movie was disowned by MGM and later became a regular on the road show circuit.
18. BRIDE OF THE MONSTER (1955)
19. DRACULA VS. FRANKENSTEIN (1971)
20. ED WOOD (1994)
21. GUMMO (1997) This movie is just like I was back in Indiana in 1969.
22. NOSFERATU (1922) this film was not shown in the USA until 1929- and then only in a few theaters in NYC.
23. WITCHCRAFT THROUGH THE AGES (1922) aka HAXAN
24. ...more later!

31. MANOS: THE HANDS OF FATE (1966) I never heard about this movie until I bought a vhs from Sinister Cinema in 1995. It said it was one of the worst movies in their catalog. So of course I bought it!
32. the SADIST (1963) When I was on Facebook, Arch Hall Jr. messaged once! I said I loved his movies and he said he had a band he played with at bars and s**t. Nice Guy! I also bought from Sinister and had no clue what I was getting into! I knew who Arch Hall Jr. was, because I seen EEGAH! (1962) when I was a kid on TV.

I like your list, but I think you mentioned BASKET CASE twice.

Surprised you've seen THE IDIOTS. I haven't. The DVD went out of print before I could get my hands on it.

I bought the IDIOTS on vhs from VIDEO SEARCH OF MIAMI- that was the name of the tapes selling company. I got the address from an ad in Fangoria magazine.
You could get crazy bootlegs from Video Miami! I bought a real disgusting tape from them called SQUIRM FEST (1989)
This IMDB description does not do justice to how vile this movie is.

I don't have it anymore. I gave it away- happy birthday, sorry f**ker!

I remember VSOM. I don't think I used it except once, though. Used to like looking at all the rare stuff in their listings. I had a couple of guys with similar catalogs who would rent tapes by mail: one was SVE, the other was Video Wasteland (I think). It was cheaper than buying and they had more than enough stuff to keep me occupied. You'd rent 3-6 tapes and send them back whenever you were done.

I still got a copy of ABBY (1974) in a Video Wasteland clam shell!   With the hand with the eyeball logo?  :bouncegiggle:
EDIT: It's not Video Wasteland. It's Video Vortex- from Canada.
They were out of Canada.
I got COP KILLERS from them to!
I'm adding that movie to my list- !

33. COP KILLERS (1973)
With the guy from Flesh Gordon( !974)!

" Get out of their way, or get ready for permanent sleep!"
I couldn't have said it better!  :bouncegiggle:
