ROBOCOP (1987) was on TCM last night and I was up 'til 4 watching it. Recommended. Splendid poop.
It's fun mindless garbage.
ROBOCOP 2 came on after but I went to bed. Weird 1st movie, touching, funny, stupid. I like it.
It's my favorite movie ever.
It's a good movie. The bad ones involve the latter films.
It's an all time classic!
Set in Detroit, but filmed in Dallas; you can see Reunion Tower in a few shots.
Seen it a couple times on TV. Has some cool ideas, but doesn't quite do it for me. I do not know why. Maybe it's too cynical?

Maybe, but it is sh!t. :teddyr:
I remember watching it for the first time and being a bit taken aback by the level of violence, especially when they blew Murphy's hand off. Today I'd watch it without blinking.

It ran into a bit of censor trouble here but it was great seeing it uncut in the cinema finally.

The fact that it was so cynical that it nearly crossed over into parody a few times is one of the things that made it really work, if you ask me. Later attempts to clean it up lacked the bite the first movies did and didn't work nearly as well.
it's more or less everything that was good about that kind of over the top, super confident, outrageously brutal, sometimes cynical, cartoony late 80s style of action movies. what a time.
and the remake was a good example of why remakes should be banned
A classic example of why the 80's were a golden decade for movies good and bad!
You can't not watch it, but you almost need a shower when you're done, it's so gritty.

Personally, I don't think it's mindless. It's very fun satire in the same vein of
STARSHIP TROOPERS (same director), and the sci-fi side of Robocop itself is well explored in his rediscovery of his humanity. I think it's a great, extremely well balanced movie.
And let's not forget the ultra-long-arms dummy scene!

Now I know why I like
ROBOCOP; I also really like
STARSHIP TROOPERS.
Great movie.
And let's give some credit to Kurtwood Smith as Clarence Boddicker. Great villain.

I like Clarence!

twice now I've been watching a random movie and been like "hey, it's Boddiker from ROBOCOP!", and on both occasions it turned out to be the actor Michael Ironside, not Kurtwood Smith.
Clarence Boddicker is one of the greatest film villains ever.
