Title: What's The Worst Pain You've Ever Felt?
Post by: ER on March 13, 2021, 08:48:43 AM
I guess me, it's a tossup between almost dying of an injury-related internal hemorrage when I was fifteen (which came with a side order of minor heart attack courtesy of a mis-administered clotting drug I was given), or, prosaic though it may be, when my daughter was born in 2008, which hurt worse than I thought it would or could. I approached childbirth arrogantly and laughed at the idea it would be very painful, and at least that time, oh, it was....

When I was in the Navy, I had an ingrown big toenail, and our Corpsman (a rather sadistic SOB, to tell you the truth!), told me the best way to deal with it was to take off the toenail and let it regrow.  He gave me a shot of local anesthetic, but then didn't wait for it to kick in all the way before he started cutting and pulling.  I discovered at that point that I had previously undiscovered muscles in my butt that enabled me to climb up the back of the chair!  He kept pulling me back down by my ankles and saying: "Hold still!  The drugs will kick in any minute!"
I said: "It's a good thing you're not the Russians, doc, because right now I'd tell you anything you want to know!"

Kidney stones. I woke up in the middle of the night and felt pain in my back and my side. I thought I was just sleeping in an awkward position, so I tried turning to my other side, my back, my stomach . . . nothing helped. Then the pain started getting worse and in addition to my back and my side, my lower abdomen started hurting. It got so bad I decided to stand up and try to "walk it off." That didn't work, so I tried sitting in a chair. Still painful. It just kept getting worse. It got so bad I got nauseous and started vomiting. I suffered with the pain for a couple hours thinking it would go away, but it got to the point I was in excruciating pain whether I laid down, sat, stood up or walked around. My wife kept telling me we should go to the hospital. Finally I agreed. She drove and I was in the passenger seat in the worst pain I ever felt. Finally we got to the emergency room and it was about an hour before they brought me in to see a doctor. The whole time in the waiting room I was doubled over in pain.  They took some tests and told me I had kidney stones and they would give me morphine. It was almost ANOTHER hour before I got the morphine. Now it was about 5 hours since the pain started. But the morphine helped very quickly. The doctor told me that would probably be the worst pain I would ever feel in my life unless I had a baby.

I had a heart attack in 2010. I would rather have another heart attack than have kidney stones again.

The last time I did a run along the local beach. I'd been having problems with my feet when I went out running for a while, but one day after doing my usual 10-mile run to the lighthouse and back I got hit with an incredible pain across the soles of my feet that stayed for the next three days and was too painful for me do to anything but basically lie in bed and roll around in agony. It was a lot more painful than either being stabbed or getting sewed up afterwards.

I guess my disc prolapse was quite painful. I had to get shots for the pain every few days. I couldn't stand up straight. I could barely walk. It took me 20 minutes and more just to get out of bed. Once I sat I was "ok" for a while. Finding the right position in bed to seep drove my family nuts but damn, I couuldn't help it.

in terms of physical pain, prolonged toothache I had about 15 yrs ago and I couldn't get to the dentist for a week. it was over xmas and that entire xmas was a blur... I've had back pain that was so bad it took me literally 10 minutes to get from sitting to standing and had a month off work, but that was nothing compared to the toothache!

In the years before I had VSG I could not do table massages because they would cause muscle spasms.  One time I had a table massage as a birthday present and I had such bad muscle spasms that I could not walk.  They tried to send me home from the ER.  I made it outside the door before another spasm put me on the ground.  I managed to stagger back in to the hospital and they had my parents come get me.  I think that was the worst pain ever for me.  I tried to have table massages since then but then couldn't walk afterwards.

Once I had VSG and lost quite a bit of weight that problem went away.  I have no problems now with table massages and find them relaxing.  If nothing else at least the VSG surgery helped make table massages pleasant.
