In preparation for Godzilla vs Kong I've decided to watch all the Monsterverse movies again. Watched this one on Sunday.
Its not better then I remembered, but I think I enjoyed it more on this recent re-watch. If that makes sense. Like, I still see all the flaws, but I was able to better look past them.
Gareth Edwards did some really good visual work on some scenes. The stand out being the halo jump sequence, as Ford and the other solider jump from a plane. Through clouds, red smoke trailing behind them, past Godzilla and the Muto's fighting. If there was any scene of a Godzilla film that would be great in VR, that'd be it.
Kong: Skull Island is next.
While not spectacular, I did find Godzilla quite watchable. Kong: Skull Island, too. I've only seen clips from King of the Monsters, and I don't hold out much hope for Godzilla vs Kong.
I think I'm the only person who enjoyed the 1998 Godzilla.
I will always have fond memories of this movie. The senior class of 2014, a group I was very close to (half the characters in my novel THE TESTIMONIUM are named after them!), graduated the week this movie premiered. For their graduation party, they reserved the local theater and did a midnight showing of GODZILLA for the kids, their significant others, family members, and favorite teachers. I was right there with them watching Godzilla fight the giant insectoids and cheering him on! Good kids and a good time.

Nope, I liked that as well
As for the 2014 version, it was a watchable monster movie, but a bit weak and generic as a reboot of the Godzilla franchise.

I've actually mellowed on it over the years. Basically, now there's two camps on it in the G-Fandom. Those that hate it. And believe me, all these years later there are plenty who still do. And the camp that sees it as a bad
Godzilla movie but it an alright giant monster movie. That's the one I'm in now. I can watch it and enjoy it -just wish the monster was called something else.

Or they just suck. No radioactive breath or glowing spine? Not Godzilla. Call it whatever you want.
I call it a waste of money and film stock. Like a TRANSFORMERS movie or garbage like 2012 or INDEPENDENCE DAY. AVATAR. What an over hyped pile of on fire s**t in a bag on your porch movie that is.
Big budget bulls**t.
That evolved into superhero movies, FAST AND FURIOUS s**t, and most million dollar franchises that reley on the "dumbest buy the most" theory. Which seems to work.
If there is a shadow of Darth Vader burned into your toast- you can sell it on Ebay.

No. It was amusing for what it was, but not much of a "Godzilla" movie. I can rewatch it, but it's more of a comedy than a monster movie.
What I liked about the 1998 Godzilla was the fact that Godzilla LOOKED LIKE A GIANT LIZARD. Specifically, an aquatic one.
I mean, traditional Godzilla, even in his newer incarnation, still remains a large, upright, round profiled, un-streamlined, man-shaped reptile altogether unfit for spending his life in the water. No webbed feet, no flattened tail for swimming - he just looks entirely too terrestrial to spend 90% of his time underwater!
1998 Godzilla looked like a plausible marine reptile. On steroids.
