Title: The Legend of Hell House (1973) ****
Post by: Scott on April 04, 2001, 09:02:02 PM
Just viewed THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE (1973). I really liked this film, the atmoshpere and everything was well done. The film even gives you a statement on the psychic phenomenon that is present in the film. There were some genuinely creepy scenes and even some erotic moments that all blend in good together. I'm not sure what year THE EXORCIST came out but this film has more atmoshpere with the house and the main characters leading up to the house, etc.

Also seen TEENAGE DEVIL DOLLS  (1952) which is a juvinile delinquint film that is all naration. The actors don't even get to talk. I thought it would be like THE VIOLENT YEARS, but seem to be more of an educational film about JD's. The tape though was hosted by Mamie Van Doren as she introduced the film to the viewers, which was a plus

BLACK VOODOO (1977) This was a terrible film that can definately be classified as an explotation film.Though the film has one or two moments of the "gratuitous" kind and only one worth mention. I was kinda hoping they had more voodoo elements, but it was just about this possessed person who went about killing people and some nurses taking their tops off. If you decide to see it watch for the pitchfork scene that  was rather graphic and out of the blue.

Scott, you are fonder of "The Legend of Hell House," then I. And
usually I like anything that Roddy McDowell appears in. (For example: see his "Fright Night.") But, what I will recommend is the book "Hell House" by the great Richard Matheson, upon which the movie is based, which originally came out in 1971, two years before the movie. (IMO) one of the great horror novels of that year or any year. Enjoy

Thanks Kevin. Even though you didn't lik it as much my wife and I liked THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE.  For a color film it had a neat atmosphere to it.

I hope everyone enjoys "The Legend of Hell House." I think my problem, was that I read the book, before I saw the movie. And if someone thinks that the movie had atmosphere, then the book had . . . ! Two more books by Richard Matheson, besides "Hell House" have been turned into movies: "Shrinking Man" as in 1951's "The Incredible Shrinking Man" w/Grant Williams and "I Am Legend" as in 1971's "Omega Man" w/ Charlton Heston or 1964's "The Last Man on Earth" w/ Vincent Price. Matheson is also responsible for a number of original screenplays including 1961's "The Pit and the Pendulum" w/ Vincent Price. And if anyone wants to see what he looks like, he appears as President Garfield in the TV miniseries, "Captain and Kings" and as the Astonished Man in "Somewhere in Time." Enjoy all

Richard Matheson sounds like an interesting guy. I'll keep that name in mind. Thanks.

I loved Hell House (the movie). Creepy and fascinating. Roddie shines in this one -probably his best role after Planet of the Apes.
