Sitting here with my daughter watching Akira tonight. Life's good....
I remember well when that first came out and suddenly manga exploded onto the west.
This is the strangest thing. I've been into anime since, well, ever. Akira was the first mature anime I ever heard of, described to me in depth by a fellow anime nut I met in 1992. I've seen it at least once, but... I've hardly watched it since. I really need to watch it again.
I regularly hear of attempts to make a live-action version. None of them seem to get very far though.
Akira was one of the biggest animes out there back when everybody still called it Japnaimation.
The other two biggies were Ghost in the Shell and Vampire Hunter D. I can still remember the VHSs of them always had those "NOT FOR CHILDREN" stickers on them and they'd still end up in the kids section half the time.
I watched it again recently, and it holds up very well. It is only then you realise how much it has been imitated over the years.

I've only got two problems with this film:
1) The ending. WTF?
2) How the hell is it possible that we never got any sequels? I finally read the whole manga years ago, there's plenty of story to tell.

Exactly! Never got that!! The manga is vast and it made plenty of money, maybe they're now worried it will turn out like the new Cowboy Bebop which is a fair concern considering how that turned out
