Cheese, onions, tomatoes, cucumber, bacon.

I'd be happy with just cheese (any kind but "American"), onions, and mayonnaise. Next tier: lettuce, sauteed mushrooms, jalapenos. I don't mind tomatoes, ketchup, bacon, or mustard. I'm up for exotic ingredients on occasion (I once had a fried egg on a burger).

I forgot tomato!
I also like jalapeno, pickles, hard cheddar or colby jack cheese.
I don't eat bacon at all unless it's on a BLT.

Forgot pickles. Pickles are a second tier ingredient for me, maybe even first tier.

I had a really excellent burger the other day, it was just beer cheese (a local specialty) and no other toppings. Anything else would have detracted from the flavor. Often simple is better in burgers.

Every year local restaurants have a week-long challenge to make the best specialty burger, I usually sample at least one or two.

mayo, mustard, ketchup, pickles, cheese (american). If bacon is an option I'll have bacon.
If it is a breakfast burger I don't mind a fried egg on top.

Not a fan of lettuce and tomatoes on burgers. Lettuce adds no flavor only texture, but I get the "crunch" texture from the pickles plus flavor. Lettuce can get hot under the hot burger patty. Hot lettuce is gross to me.

Tomato is also mostly water and has the habit of slipping and sliding on the burger. I've had tomato slices slipping out the sides many times while eating a burger. Always end up removing the tomato.

Essentials: Spicy mayo, pickles, cheese (preferably pepper Jack), onions (either raw, carmelized,  or grilled), lettuce.  I've taking a liking to putting on a fried egg and bacon onto a burger. Artichoke tapenade on a burger is good as well. I've been experimenting/suffering with extremely hot hot sauces on burgers,  which is fun....sometimes. Putting wing sauce on a burger does wonders, not gonna lie. :teddyr:

I'm pretty plain with my burgers, cheese and ketchup usually.  I do occasionally like a fried egg and mayo too, but that's not too uncommon 'round these parts.

I do have a follow-up question though - Do you think there is a correct order to assemble a cheeseburger?  It seems obvious that it's bun, cheese, burger, veggies/egg (if applicable), then squeeze ingredients (ketchup, mustard, etc.) on the other bun.  I can be flexible with what comes after the burger, but the bun-cheese-burger order is absolutely necessary because the cheese glues the burger to the bun so it doesn't slide around.  I have never had a burger served like this unless I get a plain cheeseburger and when I tell other people about the order, they act like it doesn't make any sense.

Mayo, lettuce, pickles, onions, cheese, and bacon.

Or Swiss cheese and mushrooms.

This seems to make sense, but does the bottom bun slide around if you do it that way?

Friends of mine had a restaurant in Pretoria until it closed a few years ago: my choice of hamburger was a warm bun, a hamburger patty and that was it, known as a Trevor Burger.

Depends on my mood.

* Typically, I'll go with cheese, onions, pickles, ketchup and mustard.

* Sometimes I'll add lettuce, tomato and/or bacon.

* Sometimes jalapeno peppers.

I keep it fairly simple:
Cheese, ketchup, pickles. Occasionally a slice of tomato if the mood strikes me.

Me, personally, my choice:

Rare, no cheese.  Toppings: Lettuce, Tomato, Bacon, Mushrooms, Onions, sweet peppers.  Condiments: ketchup, spicy mustard and a touch of red pepper flakes.

I like 'em plain too, but always with cheese.

Yes.  Mayo on both sides of hard roll, raw onion on bottom, ketchup dab, hot cheese burger on top of that, tomato slice, lettuce, lid.
