Title: Movies That Should Be Classics But Aren't
Post by: ER on March 04, 2022, 12:29:30 PM
I just posted about Robinson Crusoe on Mars and how it should be a classic, and isn't. Now I think about it, what other movies deserve classic status and haven't received it?

All of the films made by South African filmmakers Jans Rautenbach, Emil Nofal, David Millin ASC and others in what I call the golden age of SA cinema where the films made challenged the government of the day. The only issue is that very few of these films were released internationally because of apartheid legislation.

2004's THE ALAMO.

Highly accurate, brilliantly cast, well-acted, and beautifully filmed - and it was one of the biggest box office flops in history.

I remember you telling me years ago that the John Wayne version (while entertaining) was highly inaccurate and this one was better.

I love that movie. Someone I knew in Austin even had a screen shot from it as a laptop background with a countdown in days, hours, minutes til its premiere.

American's Funniest Videos bonus memory: I saw a big-haired girl going for popcorn trip and wipe out in the dark when I was watching The Alamo.

It's a cult classic for sure.

Some movies that didn't earn the wide audience they deserved: THE DEATH OF STALIN, THE SARAGOSSA MANUSCRIPT, BLANCANIEVES, CALVARY.

Instead of individual posts here is a top 10 list of underrated gems that should get more recognition.

The Secret of N.I.M.H (1982) - Early dark Don Bluth. It holds up well with a strong mother protagonists and mature themes.

Pumpkinhead (1988) - While there have been sequels and a Scream Factory release this deserved better treatment. Pumpkinhead should be in regular Halloween rotations and should have been a franchise with the other 80's horror greats.

Top Secret! (1984) - The other comedy from the Zuckers/Jim Abrahams. Just as strong as the Naked Gun Trilogy and Airplane but hardly get mentioned in conversation. Thankfully this is getting a US Blu-ray release.

Near Dark (1987) - While this has been catching on it still falls in the shadows of the likes of 80's vampire favorites like The Lost Boys and Fright Night. Sadly out of print but track this vampire gem down.

The Secret of Roan Inish (1994) - A gorgeously shot film that bathes in Irish folklore. Sadly no Blu-Ray release but it was on Amazon Prime.

Twilight of the Cockroaches (1987) - This was a staple in anime marathons on the Sci-fi Channel and Cartoon Network back in the 90's but unlike it's contemporaries (Akira and Vampire Hunter D) it has fallen to obscurity. Very mature with plenty of social satire.

The Rocketeer (1991) - It surprising how many Indiana Jones style films came during the 80's & 90's. The likes of Dick Tracy, The Phantom, The Shadow and Allan Quatermain all tried hard to capture the pulp flair but were met with mixed results or poor box office. The Rocketeer I feel still holds that Indy magic and holding it's own identity.

My Bodyguard (1980) - Fantastic coming of age story. Should be up there with the John Hughes titles, Fast Times and other of the time.

The Nice Guys (2016) - Great buddy cop action/comedy that was met with great reviews but under performed at the box office. It met some critics top 10's and has gotten word of mouth but still failed to get any award nominations.

Death Sentence (2007) - For those that wanted the Death Wish series to return to a more serious tone, here ya go. One of James Wan's forgotten films.

Great movie! I have it on vhs!
The director went on to do the HURT LOCKER (2008) and ZERO DARK THIRTY (2012).

I think I did, but I don't remember much about it. Need to watch it again.

^ Maybe "classic" is a little overstated. But I think it should be better remembered than it is. Of course I think DRACULA VS FRANKENSTEIN is one of the best movies of all time, so what do I know?
(and for you, I'm guessing that's a recommendation! )

Ed Wood and Mars Attacks are two great films by Tim Burton that nobody mentions in everyday conversations.

Pee Wee's Big adventure was a major accomplishment and if it hadn't been made no one would have done anything remotely like it.

LONG WEEKEND (1978)

NUTS IN MAY (1976)

2 films whose plotline is: ' husband and wife decide to go on a camping trip '

both films are poles apart in just about every respect, except for their awesomeness

It's a fun adventure movie with a great James Horner score.
