Title: EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE
Post by: Rev. Powell on April 20, 2022, 09:11:26 AM
Evelyn Wang is always harried, juggling her laundry business, neglected husband, lesbian daughter, and conservative Chinese father while being audited by the IRS; then, a man from an alternate universe possesses her husband and tells her the fate of the multiverse lies in her hands. What follows is a nonstop blend of action, comedy, philosophy, pathos, and endless imagination as Evelyn jumps from universe to universe, finding different versions of herself (and of reality).

* The script necessitates that almost everyone in it has to play multiple roles.
* James Hong is 93 and still going strong after 450 movie roles.
* Jamie Lee Curtis was unrecognizable to me.
* The branching universes plotline reminded me of the cult film MR. NOBODY, raised to the nth power.
* Kung fu was decent but obviously aided by editing and camera effects.
* Hot dog finger universe seems to be the audience's most popular parallel universe.
* As the end credits started, a young person in the audience said, "bizarre is the only word that describes that."
* One of my only complaints is that the messaging gets a little sappy at the end. I guess after all the excitement they earned the right.

Currently 8.9 on IMDB (that will come down, but it's still incredible) and 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.

I'm giving it 4.5/5 and reserving the right to raise it to 5/5 later. Best movie of the year so far. You've probably seen the trailer but here it is again just in case:

Just saw this yesterday and boy oh boy was it fun. As you said the core message is a tad sappy but too often you get 'odd for the sake of odd' nuts movies and this one it kind of has a purpose. I didn't know it at the time but Randy Newman voices Raccacoonie and even does a Pixar style song on the soundtrack (didn't stay for credits so not sure if it played in the movie)

Well worth a watch on the big screen with an audience: everyone does excellent work here with some pretty outlandish concepts and a visual flair that is all the more impressive that they barely had a vfx team.

It's being re-released to theaters with bonus content (deleted scenes) in case you missed it the first time. Still my top movie of 2022. Recommend you catch it if possible; it's a good big screen movie to see with a crowd.
