I just binged Westworld first 2 seasons and noticed a lot of smokers in it. In fact I was really amazed at how many time people lit up in that show.
For a long time smokers were getting ostracised in media, when the movie avatar committed the cardinal sin of having a good character smoke some people demanded it be rated R to keep kids from seeing -ERMUHGERD!- a good character smoking. AAAIIIIIEEEEEE!!!!!!
But lately it seems smokers are gradually returning to the media. I saw a lot in Westworld, and I seem to see more here and there in other shows and movies. Has anyone else noticed this?
I'm not a smoker but had loved ones who were, and I hate seeing smokers demonized like monsters, sure I wish people I cared about would quit but making them pariahs doesn't help. I wondered if tge gradual reintroduction of smokers into the media was some sort of trend now.
That's an interesting take on that topic! Kind of pragmatic both ways.
I remember there used to be this hard-core Trump supporter who'd post here named Sven, the most smited user in BMDO history, everybody laughed at his dumbness and everyone hated him, you know the type, I'm sure, but the thing was, before he got banned here Sven kept reminding us he was both pro-smoking and anti-universal healthcare, and he'd post all the time in these poorly written diatribes about how smokers were the victims of more discrimination than any other group in America, and how he was a two-pack a day smoker in perfect health, yet he had diabetes and couldn't by his own admission walk up the stairs to his own room in the motel where he lived: totally unrelated to his smoking though! We're pretty sure he was an incel loser, who'd never been in a relationship in his life, probably a virgin, honestly, but he'd post bondage fantasies in here, some about Ann Coulter, some about Debbie Harry, but you'd hate his hard-right take on the smoking issue. Look him up sometime if you need to see what laughably bad pseudo-Intellectualism looks like. :bouncegiggle: Even his cat ran away from him!
I last smoked in 2009: I don't want to start again.

2010 for me. gave up drinking and smoking on the same day. 12 years of terminal boredom and going strong
not watched any tv for about 3 years and don't watch many new films so can't say I've noticed a difference there, but I only know 1 person irl who is a smoker
vaping seems to have replaced it. see a lot of people vaping when I'm in town. only younger people come to think of it. I have a part time employee who's 22 and she vapes

Don't forget the monkey collection or the boot knife.
The boot knife, yes! :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle: I tried to explain how that was going to get him killed in a real world fight, but nooo it made him tough! :bouncegiggle:

Bondage fantasies about Ann Coulter? :buggedout:
A Trump supporter who was against health-care? Effim. I try not to get in on hatefests and flamewars, I like positive interactions on the net. America has gotten too hateful as is.
But again, I don't watch many shows, so I wondered if any other shows or movies were showing an uptick in smokers as characters. Maybe Westworld got away with over representing smokers since it's not publicly available tv.
I have loved ones who smoke and I hate that but not them. I wish they'd quit but I don't nag on them.
