Title: Predator (1987)
Post by: mogwai on June 12, 2002, 09:09:51 AM
Maybe, this was cool in the 80's but now it's hilarious. I find it very funny to see seven or so guys run around like crazy in any woods in America. C'mon, that movie was not filmed in the Amazon! Plus, every time Arnie says the word "work" I cannot help myself laughing like crazy! :o)

Actually, it was shot in the jungles of Mexico.  (Technically North America, but...)

Speaking of Arnie, anyone see Collatoral Damage?!? I love how Arnie is America's posterboy for Anti-terrorism. The greatest line in the movie was at the end. If you haven't seen it, see it. Speaking of Bad Action Movies, anyone see the Scorpion King?... I couldn't stop laughing.

"Predator" is a mere 80s classic:Arnie fighting the big,bad alien beast, with Carl Weathers, chump governor Jesse Ventura, scrpitwriter Shane Black(as the lower female anatomy talking, comic book reading dude),and ex-70s porn actor Sonny Landham(as the Indian of the group) all strolling along for all the action on this explosions blazing, skinned(and gutted)bodies, and machismo sprouting ride of a movie.

Predator s still a good film to me. John Mctiernan is one of the all--time great action directors, Rollerball notwithstanding. Arnie and Carl Weathers in the same movie? Cheesy action gold.

Strange post.

Anyway, I can not fault PREDATOR.  It is, to me, the quintessential action film.  There's none of the self awareness that plagues so many of these 80's films.  None of the "catch phrases" producers thought were so vital to the genre.  Nope, Arnold and his badass crew just show up in the Amazon for some reason, find an alien that is hunting humans, for some reason, and proceed to engage it in increasingly gory gun fights.

Flawless.

Plus, who doesn't love the scene where they mow down the jungle in a solid block of gunfire?  Who doesn't think Blaine, the now governor of Minnesota, has one of the coolest guns ever?  "If it bleeds, we can kill it."

PREDATOR is f**king awesome.  I love this film, and any opinions to the contrary can kiss my ass.

P.S.  Technically, South America is still an America.  It's just not the America people think of when they say "America".  So there.

Although not my favourite John McTiernan movie (I have always preferred "Die hard"), I think "Predator" is quite good. I found it boring back in 1987, but now I found it much more interesting. It is very well directed and mindless action quickly changes into something I don't know if deeper, but surely more disturbing. If it wasn't for the horrible dialogue, it would be a classic.
