Title: Have you ever been to a Drive In ?
Post by: RCMerchant on March 31, 2023, 06:09:58 AM
Ya know- theater. Not a hot dog and root beer stand.

I seen 2001: A SPACE ODESSEY back in 1968. I fell asleep after the monkeys.
Saw BAMBI too, when I was a kid.
Saw RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD in Shirley, LI!
There's one about 15 miles from here in Hartford. But they don't show anything good. Mostly kiddie fare.

The first time I visited the US, we did catch a double bill. The only things that were showing though were double bills of Snow Night (the one with her from the Twilight movies), and Battleships. Neither were particularly good movies, but we had fun together.

There was a drive-in in the small town I was from.  I remember watching Batman and Ghostbusters II there.  I probabaly saw a few other movies, but those are the only two I can remember.

I remember my little brother (who was six at the time) crying when Joker died in Batman.

This town had several back in the 1970s... Some are still standing, even though they're out of service...

The two I remember mostly, are the Bellwood, which is now a flea market, & the Southside Plaza, which is now an impound lot...
There's a tiny one in Goochland that's still standing, but it's a Christmas Tree farm now... I forget the name...

The Goochland Drive in was built in in the Gum Spring/Hadensville area in 2009, & is still up & running, But I've never been to it, because it's a pretty long way from me...

I looked it up- there are only 11 drive-ins left in Michigan. Besides the Sunset in Hatford, there's one in Dowajac (about 30 miles from here) and one in Three Rivers (also about 30 miles from here.)  :bluesad:

I have, but not to see a movie.

My oldest son graduated high school in 2020, smack in the middle of the pandemic. So since they couldn't pack the school auditorium with family members/etc. for the graduation ceremony they video taped it, and it was shown on the big screen a few nights later at a drive-in theater just over the state line in upstate New York.

I thought it was a creative solution to a unique problem.

I remember seeing when they were new LT. ROBIN CRUSOE (1966 which means I was about 4.5) CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG and about a year later COLD TURKEY ... at Drive Ins.  In the '80s, lots of crap like SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT III, METALSTORM THE DESTRUCTION OF JAROD SIN ( :lookingup:) even STAR WARS (in re-release) and MESSIAH OF EVIL... and best of all, GREMLINS in 1984.  It opens with Christmas Baby Please Come Home and the entire Drive In started cheering whistling and pounding approval that HOT July night...

Seems like it was almost a drive-in ritual to loudly tease the projectionist for any little thing that went wrong.

Went to the Family Dri-Vin (that's the spelling; no joke!) in Tigard, OR to see STAR WARS, WIZARDS and DAMNATION ALLEY-- the latter 2 on a double bill.  Replaced by a cinema in the mid to late 80s that just went defunct.

Saw the awful MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE and EXPLORERS somewhere around Seattle, as well as CREEPSHOW 2 with my mom.

Still got a few drive ins in Oregon; one probably 15 miles away or so in Newberg.

When I saw it, it called itself DEAD PEOPLE, the 2nd half of a double bill, the feature I DO NOT REMEMBER what the hell it must've beenMESSIAH OF EVIL (DEAD PEOPLE) was already about 10 years old the first time I saw it but I never forgot it.  We were stoned.  It scared the p**s out of us!  It has a 3rd title I think (like other '70s Horrors I love).

Never been to a REAL drive in. I've been to a similar thing on the late 1990s. People parked on a filed somewhere for a movie screening and you tuned to a local station to hear the dialogue. It was interesting, but nowhere similar to the real thing, at least not what it looks like on American movies. For instance, there where no snacks or drinks that i can remember, and everybody stayed inside their cars and ignored the neighbors.

That is pretty much what the American drive in that I went to was like, including the radio station (people forgot to unhook the speakers before driving off, so they'd changed from using them).

I've been following this thread for a few weeks but intended to hold off on a post until my own local drive-in opened and I could attend & take some photos. I did, this past Saturday - and now can't figure out how to use the "image" button above to post the photos! Ehhh. Anyway. It's the Transit Drive-In in Lockport, NY:

https://www.transitdrivein.com/ (https://www.transitdrivein.com/)

...A five-minute drive from my house and far & away my closest cinema. (Next closest one is at least 25 minutes away - they've dropped like flies the past five years, alas.) Therefore I consider myself blessed! There's a second drive-in (also) about 25 minutes away from me out in the boonies that somehow I've never been to. (Smaller w/ a more pedestrian selection most weeks...)

This whole region (around Buffalo, NY) was rife w/ 'em 60 years ago and there were at least two others that survived into my lifetime: one that closed in the early 80s and another that made it into the 00s.

The Transit seems like it's doing boffo business, anyway. Sat in line for tickets 20+ minutes and the concession stand was packed like Covid never even happened. Long may it thrive!

We saw RENFIELD and COCAINE BEAR - but will save critical comments for another post.

When I was little we used to go to a drive-in in Florence, Kentucky, and I got so I'd watch the ground outside instead of the movies, because wildlife like possums and raccoons would creep out among the cars to eat scraps. (Rats would scamper there too.) There was also a pride of cats who'd hunt the rats. While we were seeing Flight of the Navigator there, I saw two raccoons fight viciously over what looked like half a hamburger. It's just not as fun to see vermin inside a multiplex.

from 1965 to 1978, the months from may to october were when the meadowlark drivein and the starlite drivein were open. my momma took us at least 4 nights a month, we didn't care what was on, we watched it. but the BEST months were june, july and august, when it was either horror, scifi or fantasy movies.
   we have a drivein here in wichita, but no car, lol! and it's too hot anyway, massachusetts wasn't like that. i miss those days. :cheers:

There's a spot in Vandergrift PA about an hour outside of Pittsburgh. I grew up near it saw so many movies as a kid, but as an adult they've started doing April Ghouls and September Monster Rama. 4 movies each night so you get 8 movies in a weekend. It's been about 10 years now I've seen everything from Deep Red to Evil Dead. TCM, Halloween, Phantasm, TCM 2, Return of the Living Dead, Night, Dawn, Day, Silent Madness, The Boogens, Flesheater, Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things, Deadly Spawn, Critters, Hills Have Eyes, Sleepaway Camp, Slumber Party Massacre 1&2, Boggy Creek etc. etc. etc.

The list is endless. That's all off the top of my head but I could keep going.

There were several drive-ins in my area when I was a kid and we went at least a few times every summer. Some of the movies I saw were:

* The Godfather
* Dr. No, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger triple feature
* Ben
* Puppet on a Chain
* Don't Look in the Basement
* Don't Go in the House
* The Warriors
* Up in Smoke
* Last House on the Left
* The House that Dripped Blood
* Grease
* Nicholas and Alexandra
* Mad Max
* Rolling Thunder
* The Legend of Hell House
* The Other
* Damien: Omen II
* Vanishing Point
* Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry
* Smokey and the Bandit

There are still 2 drive-ins within about 40 minutes of my house, but we only go once every 4 or 5 years now.

Lockport, NY, which is between Buffalo and Niagara Falls. We've got a neighborhood drive-in and they play weekly "retro" selections... unfortunately. the scariest they get at Halloween is maybe the original FRIDAY THE 13TH at best. Usually it's GHOSTBUSTERS or something...

I wasn't sure if you'd already mentioned where your drive-in was located and didn't want to irritate you by asking you to repeat yourself. Howdy, though!

There's actually three within an hour drive of me.  One is about 45 minutes.  I've been to that one twice.  The first time we saw Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Prometheus as a double bill.  It's pretty fun.  I'd go more often if it was a little closer and the drive there wasn't kind of scary - it's not that far, but the area isn't fun to drive into at night and it's confusing.  I'd like to go with my nephews sometime, that'd be good I think.  Maybe next spring
