Does the index have a scratch and sniff portion?

I am a bit concerned about the idiots chapter where I take on foreign filmmakers who made anti-South African films as I really let them have it: I don't know what American libel laws are like. :buggedout:

Probably similar to S.A. law, S.A. has a common law history. Opinions are not libel, only facts are. If you state your opinion that Michael Bay is a terrible filmmaker, that's not libel. If you knowingly falsely claim Michael Bay has syphilis, that's libel.

Aww crap, that was one of my comments I made :buggedout:
I don't reflect on people like Richard Attenborough and Richard Donner personally, just their films. Incidentally, I always wondered if Attenborough knew he was playing a South African in
The Great Escape?

WTF is that supposed to mean exactly? :hatred:

They don't have my full manuscript as yet and certainly not that chapter, so they didn't judge my full manuscript 🤬

Hey, at least you got a quick answer. I've been waiting 2 months to hear back from a publisher. (They did verify they had my proposal, so...)

The company Intellect Publishers in the UK publish "scholarly texts" written by people who probably haven't touched a camera or ever been on a movie set before. I don't mind the rejection, it's just that they didn't have my entire ms and they judged the book's potential on that alone.
From what little I've looked into things previously, that does seem to be how the publishing industry works. Even if they had the whole thing you have no guarantee that they've sat down and read it all alas.

I hear you very clearly: I have been trying to get published since 1992.
Why don't you open your own publishing business? It would cost relatively little in this day and age and then you could make money helping others get published, and have control over your own title.
This was my reply to them a few minutes ago:
QuoteThanks for the email regarding my ms.
I am a bit saddened that you feel the ms is not for you for two reasons:
(a) the manuscript is almost five hundred pages in length, it is a scholarly work which will appeal to many and you did not even receive a quarter of it so it was judged on what you did receive.
(b) I feel the refusal is more to do with my supposed lack of academic credentials than my work, even though I am a thirty year film industry veteran who lived through most of what is described in the book and have assisted on over five hundred films. None of your authors can claim that.
That aside, I would just like to request that the information which was sent to you be discarded as I do not wish to see any of my IP being used in any other publications online or hard copies.
We shall see. :tongueout: :twirl: :drink:
Their loss, Trevor! Hang in there.
Brandon Sanderson had to shop his first book to something like a score of publishers, but eventually he found success. Stephen King says getting published that first time is like a lot like being willing to keep feeding chips into a slot machine: enough patience and it'll eventually pay off. I hope they give you constructive feedback or at least an explanation.
Writers need thick skin, and remember, no matter what they say, good or bad, it's just their opinion. Good luck!
Well, I have to give them credit: they responded. :teddyr:

Our decision was based much more on the fact that we have a couple of books examining the South African film industry already and the most recent is not selling very well. We do not have particularly robust distribution in South Africa and that has proved a problem for a primary market, and the market is limited in the US and UK it seems, or at least has been for our recent efforts. We pride ourselves on working with practitioners as well as academics so I can assure you the decision was not based simply on your credentials.
Not based simply on my credentials, huh? You had my four page CV, you morons. :tongueout:

That was nice of them. When I get rejections that include a personal note/explanation/advice rather than just a form letter I count that as a win. Their explanation makes perfect sense and doesn't reflect on the quality of your work.

Heh. It may have been specifically chosen for that reason. Then again I am not looking to sell anything there so no, not exactly worried. In the unlikely event, I was to be going to Russia or involved in some business there, that might have to change (slight shame because it is a country I would have liked to have visited). If I was selling a book there, that violated their laws it is something I'd have to think about.

Sure.
The company which bought up the film library are the persons of interest here but our copyright act is very clear with regard to public domain and copyright: after 50 years, a movie is public domain and it cannot be renewed, unlike in the USA.
I informed them that all 10 of the stills I wanted for my book are older than 50 years and therefore PD: I said I would credit them, submit a letter of indemnity etc and they chose to ignore the act, stating that although the films were in public domain, they would not release the stills (which they do not even have) to me for publishing.
I told them that I would be going to the archives and requesting the stills - I am well within my rights to do so with a letter of indemnity - and that is when the proverbial hit the fan.
I haven't slept for the last two nights but this morning, I reduced the number of stills I wanted and will pay a nominal fee (total $300) which is a lot less than the almost ZAR22 000 they quoted me first.
All of this s*** p**ses me off: there should be no rights and no charge. :bluesad:

Exactly. I have been working with this company since 1997, I took hundreds of reels of film to the lab for them, hosted screenings, wrote DVD slip sheets and promoted them if people needed movies that weren't available.
F*** them: as soon as I pay them tomorrow, I am done with them permanently even if they offer me employment.
If you are going to pay them, then make sure you make it a pain in the arsenal for them. Use only small denomination coins, or write a cheque on the side of an elephant.
